Hi all,
Just a quick question - I've been advised to think about replacing the purple air trumpets on my 4.5 as externally they're looking a bit aged. I've asked for an internal inspection at the next service (very soon). My question is - do these parts deteriorate and have many owners had replacements (other than performance mods)?
Cheers James
P.S. sorry for the cock-up with the previous message - how do you edit the thread title if you forgot to put one in?

Personally I think the silicone pipes are probably the worst bit of design I have ever seen on a car.
They get hot and deteriorate.
They collapse and ruin your air distribution, potentially affecting power and torque output greatly and also
possibly casuing engine damage.
They're attachment isn't that great either as if the clips are done up too tight they break the air boxes (previously done on mine, so now I've got to sort those out).
And they seem to stain very easily.
tbh honest they're shite.
The ACT pipes look better, should tune better for top end performance. Ideally I'd like a 4.2 set up on my 4.5, reckon it would perform much better although it doesn't have the same look.

You want the best? Theres only one man that does the best ( direct replacements, no flaffing around with toilet-roll tube sizes
)
Take a look at this:
Carbon Al is your man, he does them in carbon too, so yup if you wanna keep that sweet engine-hidden look in the bay, then this is the way to go, carbon, glossy and will probably outlast the car
www.carboncerbie.com
Obviously if you are into the tuning malarky, then theres a number of induction kits available now, but I hate the way they just open the engine up to the naked eye, Craigs install as the above pic is what I call art!

I have to admit that the carbon pipes look fantastic, however, if you are willing to wait a few more weeks, then Trackcar Solutions will be selling some that are similar to mine (pic below), they are a direct hose replacement and require no alteration of the trumpets, they are therefore significantly cheaper than the Carbon (albeit these are still top VFM) and ACT kits. If you were to go down the "shorter" pipe route then ideally a remap would be required, this would result in a performance gain as well as adding to improved driveability. You would also not have to worry about the pipes collapsing and looking dis-coloured like the existing TVR ones do.

Bear in mind with the ACT kit that a carbon fibre back plate with proper trumpets is included as part of the cost.

cyclone's kit proves they don't need the carbon trumpets though , that's extra needless expense unless your backplate is completely goosed.

I know you're very cost conscious Joolz and you're right you may not absolutely need them. I mean, you could hardly acuse the standard TVR back plate of having trumpets. However, proper ones do make a make a difference. Every engine in top motorsport runs them and they wouldn't do that if it was a needless expense.

But hasn't cyclone got the highest BHP Cerb? If so then he's demonstrating you don't need them?
Well, without shooting myself in the foot as Im running at SRR tomorrow (I hate egg on my face, its a bastard to get off when its dried), my last RR showed 414bhp on Austec's rollers, and Joo's reading was on Joolz's (now Im getting confused with these Joo characters
) RR. We need Joo, err Cyclone down at SRR if he isnt running tomorrow so we are all on a level playing field
That is of course if we are discounting his 450bhp readout

My 410bhp run was indeed on Joolz'z rollers, so people can be as sceptical as they like, my run prior to that was done on Nobles rollers. The last three runs are as follows:
November 2005 - 406bhp at Nobles
February 2006 - 406bhp at Trackcar (car was exactly the same spec as Nobles run)
February 2006 - 410bhp at Trackcar with linked decats.
I've only been to Surrey RR once and that was in March last year where my Cerb made 339.6bhp as standard and then with an unmapped Emerald made 375bhp, the rest of my cars life history is captured here - www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=223033 I will update it with all the latest tweaks, graphs and figures on Sunday
I won't be at Surrey Rolling Road on Saturday as I will be indulging in one of my other passions in life......supporting Nottingham Forest

, we have an Exec Box so couldn't turn down the opportunity. I will however be at Santa Pod on April 8th and am really looking forward to it. As a suggestion, why don't some of you southerners venture up north and have a run on Joolz'z Dyno? I know that Joolz doesn't really want to host "Shoot Out Days", but he might just do this one?????? With reference to the pipes the backplates aren't a necessity to be changed. In the ACT design changing the backplate / trumpets certainly aids the single diameter design of the pipe (50mm straight through) from a fitment perspective and will be of a better finish than the existing backplate / trumpets, this is great as it will be an improvement if that's what the customer wants. In order to maintain the most efficient flow of air we found it more beneficial to maintain the existing 70mm to 50mm reducing dimension as opposed to 50mm all the way, therefore there was no need at all to alter the backplate / trumpets. The pipes on my car are the prototypes that produced the "smoothest" torque and power curves that Nobles had seen, and they've now mapped numerous Cerbs and that can only be down to the design of the pipes as well as some accurate tuning. The latest model of the pipes are an evolution of what is on my car and will deliver the same if not better results. These will be available for purchase very shortly from Trackcar.

Well I suppose someone has to
Tell me about it, they need all the help they can get............it's still hard to believe that they were twice European Champions not so long ago......Poor Cloughie must be doing a fair bit of turning in his grave these days.........
I was really hoping to compare my mods with "the competition" on saturday on as they say a level playing field, i have a lot to say on the subject of back plates / trumpets etc, i don't have the time and don't believe it's correct for me to get into forum arguments.
anybody wishing to discuss trumpets tommorow please feel free to ask questions i'll be there most of the day.
