My car has a 4.5 crank fitted.

My brother in law got hold of the car knowing it had an oil pressure problem, it only had 20psi. The engine was removed and it was found that the pick up was blocked with a load of sealant, from the factory I guess. The damage was bad. New crank, block, pistons, cams but we kept the heads and the sump, so the oil dipstick is still at the back.

I dont know if it was just due to the extent of the rebuild but we did us a 4.5 crank.

Where is the car?

Its at the local indy, they wanted me to put a second hand engine in but i would prefer mine to be rebuilt, just waiting for them to get back to me with prices. Can you just put a 4.5 crank in with out changing other things? my cousin has engine recon place so could probably get him to do the work, just a matter of sourcing parts.

As for prices, 4-5K seems to be the ball park figure.

Although I am sure you brother is a 1st class engine builder I am not sure if I would trust my engine with anyone other than a TVR indy or such forth. The engines have a very special set up process, for instance then timing is a real PITA, cam timing i mean.

if somneone is a well respected engine builder with vast knowledge then there is no reason as to why they couldnt rebuild the lump, its an engine after all, if an engine builder doesnt know how to set up the cam timing etc then they aint worth squatt!

I have entrusted mine with a non TVR specialist. The owner has been rebuilding engines for over 40 years and called the AJP8 "very simple". Also, I've given him the engine rebuild manual which has just recently surfaced on ebay, so I'm more than confident it will be fine!

As i understand it the 4.5 crank has larger diameter main journals but is otherwise exactly the same ( one suspects that the larger mains bearings are the same as the larger Rover v8 main bearings, as the smaller ones are 'pre-serp' RV8)

Question is; how much can you get a 4.5 crank for?

Which maybe why I had to have a new block.

Exactly what happened with my 4.5 recently. Generally thought to be over zealousness with sealant when refitting the sump I'm told - although unlike you I caught it fairly early it appeared. Make sure your builder goes easy on the sealant See www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=243198
