Its a 1999 Cerb 4.2, does anyone know this car? Its in good condition but I'm quite concerned that there was fibres from fibreglass on the back seat and also that it sounded a bit cammy. I was under the belief that its the early models that sound a bit like a diesel, is this correct? Its done 38000 miles and has a full TVR service history.
It also had what I thought was the older looking engine and not the type with the rubber induction tubes, is this correct or am I confusing the 4.2 with the 4.5?

The 4.5 has the silicone cross over induction hoses - the 4.2 has the cast induction. I think the early blocks are identified by having the dip stick at the back of the engine - the newer ones have it at the front.

Dipstick was at front. It had just over 40 psi oil pressure, is this ok?

Sounds about right, what was it at 3000rpm under load?

Early 4.2s may have clatter cams still, and sound awful on startup, the "whisper" cams don't sound much better
All Cerbs may sound a bit "cammy" and like a tractor depending on what you are used to previously.

It should have had the tappets adjusted at the last service (36k). Mines a 98 4.2 (dipstick at rear) and it is very cammy at cold start idle. It has 59000 miles though and shows 45psi at start up. 50psi under load. I've no idea what cams I have in mine.

Did they have an explanation for the fibres on the rear seat?

Unfortunately, he does'nt know too much about the car as he buys unwanted trade-ins from car dealers and sells them on to other dealers or private buyers, however a very good friend works at the garage he got the car from but all he could tell me was that it was owned by a mature gentleman and had been his pride and joy.
We did'nt get a chance to really warm the car up as it ran out of petrol.

Oil pressure's low for a cold engine...Mine reads 85, that said, A new pressure relief spring & valve will probably give you a higher reading.

Was gonna say mine reads 60+ on start up and idle.

Also running out of fuel isn't that bad for the cats. Only if you were giving it beans at the time and they were already hot. Injectors are different though. Bet there's a nice load of sludge in them now.

I would have thought that the oil pressure was a bit low for a cold engine with cold thick oil. mines about 60-70 when cold and about 40-50 when warm.....and i may be selling soon (check it out in my profile) as ive a bit of a thing for a westfield megablade...erherm...Im going to get a slating now!

Heh, reading comprehension was poor yesterday! 40psi is good for a warm engine, not a cold one! Ignore me

Even before my rebuild, I was getting 70psi at cold (only 10psi at warm though )

hi Gareth - not at all, its just as good as i had hoped it to be, and more! I really love the cerbie, and tbh im not really sure i can bring myself to sell it yet. But i want to join a few of my friends in doing track days, and my cerb imo is too nice to be ragged on track. My cerb is only used on dry days atm, so spends more time in my garage than out playing, so i may aswell sell it and buy something cheaper that i can put on track and take out on nice sunny weekends.
I know if i do sell tho ill miss it bigtime like the previous owner who still emails me about it!lol! Ive certaintly been bitten big time by the cerbera bug, and once i get my right zorst fixed and take it out again ill prob change my mind!lol! oh and its been about 4months now, heh heh!

Get the bugger out of the garage and use it. Even if you only do one track day, you have to do it to see what it's like using ever ounce of power the Cerb can offer without worrying too much about speed traps and crashing into numpty drivers.

It's a sportscar, don't treat it like a classic.
