Strange steering feel...

The steering on the Cerb has gone a little strange on my drive to work this morning.

Basically, when you apply some turn to the wheel, it's as if the rack is stiff or stuck in that position. Add a little more weight to the turn and it eases, and then turns smoothly as normal. Leave the wheel in that position for a moment or two, and then turn back and you get the stiff or stuck feeling.

Any thoughts, folks?

UJ on the steering shaft, its at the back of the OSF wheel well.

Maybe not, if it is this there may just be a load of crap in the UJ. Try giving it a good spray of WD40 and see if it eases the situation.

Right! Checked the power steering fluid level, and it seems that I have very little left.

Now, apart from trying to find the leak (any thoughts where to start?), I can clearly keep it topped up for now, so...


...what the heck do I put in it?

Dexron III A rack from TVR is a fortune! Much netter going to Power Steering Services in Greenwich. Overhaul for £150 with Warranty.

Actually, what I meant was, can't I top up the fluid initially? Surely the only risk is that it leaks agaim, which I didn't think had disastrous consequences? Apart from requiring some enlargened muscles!

Surely it's worth a top up first? You might find that due to the low fluid, what was left became overworked/overheated in a vicious circle. I had low fluid on my old Cherokee Jeep due to a fluid resevoir leak. Everything became very noisy but it worked fine once the resevoir was replaced and fluid renewed.

I'd rather top it up before taking it in anyway, so is there "special" fluid for this? Is there a particular spec?

Had the UJ and the PAS done on mine when I first bought my Cerb. Took a couple of weeks to get it all refurbed but what a difference when it was completed.

I've just had it suggested by Fernies (who know the car), that it is most likely to be the UJ seizing up than anything else.

So now I've got a bunch of grubby jobs to do.

Should I buy myself some overalls! Maybe some with a TVR logo on...
