Engine out! Advice please......

OK, i was supposed to pick my frist Cerbera up on Sat. The garage has just rung me to say its going to be another week as the TVR garage in Harrogate (Horseless carriages) have said that the oil leak can only be sorted by taking the engine out! The dealer thought that the car would just need a seal but the garage has told him that the engine doesn't have a gasket as a seal and instead sealent is used??? Is this true and does the engine really need to come out? They've qouted him a grand as it will take 20 hrs. "remove front engine cover, re seal and put back" is what they told him needed to be done. Any advice would be much appreciated also is this likely to happen again?.

Yip they are paying. He did say though that it wouldnt of been covered by the warranty as its like a gasket and apparently these are not covered.

I would fight that! There is a defect, an oil leak. It should be covered under warranty.

Mines had the engine out twice since I've had it & I've had various seals replaced.

I havn't checked it on a clean peice of card yet (my new drive is somewhat knackered), but I'd be shocked if isn't leaking oil.

Guess I'm getting a tad pessimistic in my old age.

FWIW, Power charge 12 hours (£775) to remove & re fit.


How bad's the leak ? Is it one drop overnight ?

Not sure how bad the leak is to be honest. I didnt even know it was leaking - The TVR garage picked it up on the inspection. The guy at the garage did say that TVR's in general leak oil (this is not case as was discussed on a previous thread). Just a bit peed off about waiting another week for the car - they did say they would drop it off at my house....which was nice....

Don't get peed off, really is better to have things like this sorted before you start paying the bills!

The wait will be worth it!

You've depressed me now..

I thought I'd test my theory today & put a piece of cardboard under the car.

It's sat there all day and there it it......one drop of oil, as usual.

It always throws out one drop when you park it, I can leave it there for a month & there will still only be one drop

The oil position is as far towards the front of the car as you can get, slightly off centre towards the drivers side

Do yourself a favour, tell them to leave the leak & give you the grand

Russell, I am sure there was a thread on here about a habit the Cerb has of flowing a tiny bit of oil back from the crank case pipe thing. The result was a tiny bit of oil coming out the front exactly like yours.
Mine has left a tiny spot on the inside edge of the mouth area, just a drop sitting there.
Maybe if it is coming from a pipe around that area then it could be the same thing, so not realy a leak.
Cant remember the chap bying, but I reckon if you looked under 10 Cerbs all would show oil.

My old one must have had a problem then. In 2 1/2 years of having it there was never any oil left on my garage floor. It used some oil but never dripped any.

mines the same well apart from the tiny spot which does not happen now.
What I was meaning to say was, all 10 Cerbs would have oilly bits showing, I did not mean dripping out of the thing.

i'm sorry to hear of this steve, i spoke to steve at sscc in boroughbridge who serviced you car about a month ago and he said it was in godd condition with no real problems, i have the number of the guy who used to own it if you want. Has anybody dealt with hhc? would they normally take the opportunity to make a few bob out of nothing?

It wouldnt surprise me - it wont be ready for saturday now, taking longer than they thought.... it will have been 2 weeks by Wednesday next week since i put the deposit on it. Giles has been very apologetic, me thinks the TVR garage are trying to pull the wool! The oil leak wasnt that bad.

Mine leaks oil from the hose where it joins the oil cooler. I often see traces of oil around the 'hole' beneeth the near side indicator.

You should be careful if you have leaks around the oil lines - when I removed all of my old ones there were numerous cracks/blisters from ageing. If it goes pop with 5 bar or so pressure, it could prove costly! I'd check the pipes if any of them are weeping.....
