What's it for? Do we ever need to remove it?

Think it shuts everything down bar the alarm system. Extra security if you are concerned about where you are parking, but I hear the downside is that it tends to throw a lot of the electrics/control boxes etc out of whack and can cause more problems than its worth - general opinion seems to be leave it be and let the alarm/immobiliser do the work.

It's the Ignition Failsafe Key. If it's turned anti clockwise and removed all ignition controls are disabled. Note that this key overides all normal operation of the electronic immobiliser and the vehicle will be inoperable unless the key is inserted. It is not essential to remove this key to immobilise the vehicle. WARNING only in an emergency should this key be used to switch off the engine and ignition. Under normal conditions leave turned on even when leaving the vehicle.

I once heard of a story where someone turned the key and the lock behind the cubby hole disintegrated and fell down the back,cue no electrics and even worse a couple of hundred bill involving towing car to dealer and hours labour finding it and put back together etc etc. Since hearing that I won't touch it !!
