Hello all.

Have noticed a Tinkly/Tinny/Tappy engine noise coming from the top of the engine over the last couple of months. I don't know if its got worse, or if I just notice it more because its annoying me. It seems to get faster on acceleration but then gets drowned out by the noise of the engine, but becomes apparent again as the engine settles back to idle when the revs drop to 1000rpm again.

Any ideas - I have a few thoughts of my own, but am not too sure.

Cheers

You can hear it getting progressively faster as the revs rise and then the opposite way around as the revs drop. I wouldn't worry about the noise too much unless it starts to suddenly get really loud and noticeable, nearly all of the 4.5s I've driven have this sound and it's only when you notice the noise that you can hear it on other cars.

Sounds like pinking to me, mine used to do it, a metalic tinkling. Had a remap with Jols Track Car all gone.
The standard map can run very lean, not good.

Just read the post fully, not pinking, mine has allways had a slight tick to it, nothing to serious . Mine does go away once warmed up though.
What oil are you using?

I'd check your valve springs, maybe one has broken.

Is this easy, or shall I pay a visit to the indie? Don't mind getting my hands dirty, but don't want to end up with bits of engine all over the place!!!

you will have to remove the rocker cover and possibly inlet pipes to get it off, i wouldnt bother if you dont know what you are doing. Though if it were a broken valve spring youd run the risk of the top hat leaving the valve stem, of the broken spring coil binding the other spring, personally i dont think it sounds like that, more like loose tappets. When were they checked/adjusted last?

You need to remove the rocker cover, then push each valve spring down if one is easier than the others to push then thats your broken spring.

If its ticking, check your oil is topped up.

If the ticking is progressive, ie gets louder to a certain point before the rest of the engine/exhaust noise kicks in, then take the car down to your mech.

Yup, like the rest said, they do tick a little, but normally once the oil pressure goes up and the temps come down, the ticking fades away to a slightly audible note.... but if your's is continuing to be VERY audible at idle - I'd get a quick checkup just to be on the safe side...

TVRS = dont take any risks... and if you aint got much time for manual work, then just pop down to your mech, it should in theory be no more than 1 hour for a decent mech to rip her open and give you the low-down - or another 1-2 hours on top to redo the shimming if thats whats required...

This (oil) is the first thing I checked and it was right bang in the middle of the two lines, so no problems there...

Marcus,

Best bet would be to take it to your nearest Indie to have it listened to. This will either help identify a problem so that it can be rectified, or it may turn out to be nothing to worry about. The longer you leave it the more you will worry about what could be wrong.

I always keep mine topped up to the max mark - so which is right or doesn't it matter?

Topped up to the 2nd line. Its about a litre difference between the low and correct mark. The term high shouldn't really be used as it seems to infer too much.
