steering wheel movement and windscreen wipers turning on!

Can someone please help.

Recently I have noticed that the steering wheel has more side to side play than before and when ever pulling slightly on the wheel e.g. when reversing or on hard lock during parking etc the Windscreen wipers come on! i thought i was going mad then on investigation realised that by wiggling nthe steering wheel side to side I could go through the whole wiper speed program!

Is this something to do with the control ribbon? or does the steering wheel just need tightening on its boss.

Probably not the ribbon in this case. More likely that the insulation on the wires from the steering wheel switches has worn away so that they can short. The fact that there is more play suggests something has loosened. Remove the wheel from the boss, you will likely find the offending wire. Repar / replace that and then make sure everything is tight.

When I removed my steering wheel, I discovered that all the wires for the steering wheel buttons were trapped and squashed behind the centre boss. I'd love to get my hands on the last person to have removed and refitted it, It really was atrocious.

It is very fiddly re-attaching the little single plugs for each wire, and please make a note of where they go. You don't want to be pressing your wiper button to find your horn sounding....

Tell me about it! and in mine some of the copper visible through the insulation on some of the wires, hence intermittent horn, if you see what I mean!

removed the steering wheel and indeed it was the wires being squashed and had actually loosened the No. 4 plug, all tidied up and wireing tucked away and fixed. the boss was also a fraction loose and with the slightest turn on the nut it was tight again and the slight rock removed. Obviously had to take it for a 50 mile test drive just to check everything was ok!

Ha ha any excuse to get a bit of driving done in it, especially as i have just had a notice of intended prosecution for being caught by a mobile Scammera van on the M4 in the work car. 98 mph. Any thoughts on what I'll get or ways to get out of it, considering the Scammera Van just white, side on over a bridge with the snallest marking sticker ever!
