hi everyone
After digging around to get to the mbe and spending even longer to get the screws off the box i've discovered that my mbe has the 2 cables attached to the outside of the box (a 3 and a 2 pin cable - the car is a 2001 4.5) can anyone advise on the easiest way to get the cable talking to my laptop (ideally via usb) thanks

Well it is a serial connection, if yours doesn't have the on-board 9-pin D connector the 3-pin one you have is probably the one to use.
You'll need to make an adaptor from it to a 9-pin D connector that a PC uses for serial port. If you need to use USB you'll need a USB to serial adaptor - they sometimes work, sometimes don't - it's down to the Com port that Windows assigns to a USB device.
Somewhere on here recently there was a discussion about adapting the connector you have to a serial. There are two signal wires, tx data, rx data, plus ground. If you get them the wrong way round it won't damage anything, it just won't work.
Try doing a search on here for the recent discussion about this.

I've been reading a few of your posts on this subject and was going to mail you at some point anyway. is there anywhere I can just buy an off the shelf solution witout having to borrow parts from other areas of the car (bearing in mind i'm not that technical!)

The simple way is to buy the curly lead from MBE, then if you have the three pin connector take the 9 pin serial connector off one end.
Inside you will see three wires, connect these with a standard connector block (white plastic electrical) to the connector you have removed from your rear lights.
Leave it connected to the car and tuck up out of the way.

Do we know which wires go to which of the three pins from the light connetor?
