The cars has recently developed a bad misfire which I have concluded only becomes apparent when the engine's hot and/or put under load - it backfired spectacularly too. I fitted some new Magnacor HT leads yesterday (which I had been promising myself anyways given a single HT lead had required replacement recently) and noticed an immediate improvement in idle smoothness and in power delivery UNTIL the engine warmed up enough for me to give it some real beanz. Unfortunately the misfire started to return around 4000 rpm and indeed sometimes below that - almost like it had dropped a cylinder or two. I'm now thinking the coilpack(s) are breaking up under heat/load - any constructive comments? The plugs have also been replaced fairly recently too. I have the diagnostic software but no leads or serial port equipped laptop (3 USBs though!). Incidentally - where is the ECU - please tell me its not buried under a ton of sealant somewhere Do I now invest in 2 x £21 coil packs from eurocarparts and strip all the induction bits off again and the fuel rail too this time to fit them? If so, any do and dont's with the fuel rail dis-assembly - it looks fairly straightforward. Thanks

ECU is at the end of the passengers footwell, mounted vertically behind the carpet.

You'll need a serial port on your laptop, my new one doesn't work, as it has no serial port, and a serial/usb convertor didn't work, but I've kept an old steam driven computer just to plug into....don't care if it gets dropped or oily !!!

Not much idea on the misfire, could be, as you say, the coilpacks, and I think you can change them with the fuel rail in place...goes to garage to have a look.....

hmm..maybe not then, the fuel rail is as easy as it looks, you'll just need a bit of sealant for the gaskets when re-fitting.

Let us know what it turns out to be...sorry I'm not more help

Thanks. Didn't notice any fuel rail related gaskets when I had all the induction kit off though? Exactly where do you mean?

Should have checked your profile before I replied, I'm thinking 4.2, and that's not much use to you really !!

Replaced both coils packs this afternoon with the Citroen ZX/Peugeot jobbies from German, French & Swedish at £21 each. Bit of a mare to get to them but worth it all as the car now idles and runs far more smoothly - the Magnacors help too I guess.
