Cracked Windscreen

Got a cracked windscreen, have no idea how its happened. Took the car to Bolton Abbey yesterday, in the rain, when we got home it was too wet to cover, so left the car uncovered overnight. Got in this morning and noticed a crack coming up from the bottom of the screen to the right of center as you look from the inside. Do they get stress fractures in the windscreens?
The screen has no chip marks as if a stone has hit it, and the crack has no sharp edges inside or out, it looks like a fancy swirl inside the glass, but as I drove the car this morning it grew bigger, so is now confined to quarters until it goes for its service either later this week or early next, and gets a new screen.
Does anyone know how long its going to take to get a new windscreen? MOH is due home on the 26th and was hoping the car would be serviced and ready for his 3 week leave.
