advice / help on strange noise.

Hello, can anybody cast any light on a light knocking / tapping noise that has just started on the near side of my cerb.

I can't tell if it's coming from the front or back of the car,but when putting that side of the car under load as in cornering it gets louder.
When braking gently or hard the noise stops and starts again when the brakes are released.

Any input would be most appreciated.

Could be any number of things:
Exhaust knocking
CV joint
Wheel bearing
Diff mount

Is it a loud thud (i.e. somthing that sounds heavy), or more of a typewritter ticking noise ?

Its more like a quiet typewriter kind of noise.( clicking )
I think not the exhaust.
I know its hard to give advice when you can't here it in person.

Mine used to do this, apparently the "shims" were missing from the brake pads.

I'm sure somebody will elaborate on that for you.

can anyone help with the loud shreik my brakes let out. i am more than happy with most other noises my 4.5 Cerb makes, but the screaming is surely meant to come from the passengers, not the brakes.
does it with "normal" braking, not light braking, not when i stamp on them, just everyday braking, and its becomming a right pain !!
pads are not worn, discs a little scored, but not too bad.

Could well be ! A bit of copper slip behind the pad could cure it if you don't have the shims....

Has it done it ever since you bought the car, or has it appeared over a period of time ?

As far as i can remember it has just started,at first i thought it was at the back end, but now i think it could be the front, possibly the weel bearings ???. I dont know, its anoying and i dont want any thing to go bang when trying to exersize the excelerator pedel.

I'd take a jaunt to your local dealer/indi & get them to have a quick check.

If it's only just started & isn't all the time, it's not terminal yet - but better to get things like this sorted quickly before they turn into something nasty !

(wheel bearings are very easy to check, as are brake pads & CV joints/diff mounts as long as you have a ramp !)

I twill be the type of pad you are using, Cerbs have 'racing' brakes designed for hard braking, if you can 'control' the screeching with your brake pedal - ie brake harder and it doesnt screech, and vice versa - then it's your brakes, nothing to worry about it's a common problem. But to set your mind at rest just nip round to Cerb specialist for their opinion.

does it sound like a tapping noise when you are at slow speeds but gets faster and stops when you apply the brakes then it is the pads. the holes that the split pin goes through on the calipars are smaller than than the holes on the pads ( take one out and you will see what I mean ) this causes the pad to jump up and down hiting the hub and sounds like casstonets the spanish things . the cure for this is to take out the pads and apply silicone sealant to the back of the pads put them back in and keep your foot on the brake pedal for a while to stick the pads to the piston that pushes the pads then leave to dry and this will stop the noise. done it to my cerb a few times.

this has just started on mine aswell ...like a clicking at low speeds but stops when pedal is pressed.This silicone cure,will it still work when the calipers get up to temp?I`ve got this image of boiling silicon dripping all over brakes.

If you use the heat resistant type it will be fine
