How can you Tell

How can you tell the difference between the Speed Six, 4.2 and 4.5 with out lifting the bonnet. Is it true that the Exhaust Pipes are shorter on the Speed Six ?

the exhausts are different but not sure they are shorter.
The badges (normally give it away) ie cerbera only normally means 4.2, cerbera 450 = 4.5 and Cerbera Speed Six = 4.0ltr Six cyl.
Wheels and lights arrangements used to be clues (eg late cars with MG lights are non-4.5s)but so many have been 'upgraded' so that it isnt a good clue.

Certainly does !
Cerbera = 4.2
Cerbera 4.5 = 4.5
Cerbera Speed 6 = 4.0 (Speed 6)

Mind you, that said I know people who have swapped the rear badge, so that it's fool proof !

The 4.5 has bigger brakes that the 4.2 & Speed 6, but there are people who have upgraded so that won't always work either !

If the car still har original wheels : Speed 6 & 4.2 had 16's (the 4.2 had a lower profile on the front tyres), while the 4.5 came with 17's or 18's. But a LOT of people have changed to 18's now & the 18's were offered as a facroty fit option.

In short - it's very hard !

Should have said the car is for sale and the seller does point out it has been re-badged.

Mine is a 2001 4.5 LW and has a 'Cerbera' badge.
People also change them to do them down !
