Yet another clutch thread.

My clutch went a couple of weeks ago and now the garage has it in bits it seems that I have the early style clutch. Dave at Automeddon is trying his best to source a replacement without having to go the expense of changing everything for the later style. Just thought I would ask to see if anyone else has any ideas for replacing the early clutch with an equivalent, getting the original rebuilt etc?

There was a thread earlier regarding buying AP clutches by there size etc.

I'll dig it up...

I have searched, come up with a couple of people who have supposedly had rebuilds. Also someone who had an alternative clutch fitted. Unfortunately it never seems to go anywhere. Autocraft were offering a rebuild service but they were let down and it never actually happened.

You can get the bellhousing machined to fit the later style clutch, which will reduce the cost a bit. I recently had mine done at Topcats.

Relax, here it is:

The correct clutch, unless I am mistaken is part no. CP5282-34GRY, which is a one fits all clutch for all AJP8 and Speed 6 engined TVRs.
Spec is 215mm / 8.5" diameter twin plate organic, the gearbox input shaft is 1" x 23 spline.

Call AP Direct as they sell to anyone! They wont sell you the TVR spec'd one but they will however sell you a slightly different one for a few quid less than TVR! And its better torque holding.

Give them a call (02476639595) as I dont know what the part number is. I got one sent over when I was replacing mine as I bought a standard one then decided to go for one that will hold better power. Their Tech people spec'd it up and sent me one out for around £350 + VAT

As long as they dont use the TVR designed parts they can supply you the kit. They will do any sort of plates you want so if you want something a bit special they'll do it and not alot more money either.

Dude this isn't the thread I meant but it looks much more interesting!

where'd you dig it up?

Has anyone been successful with this? Could I have forgone the Bellhousing/flywheel upgrade fiasco and just bought one from AP?

Hi, I've brought the thread to the top of the cerb forum. A happy mis-understanding then. Don't know the ins and outs of your car problem(and probably best not to know from the sounds of it) but this certainly looks like a long term solution and get the settings advice from AP for long life.

This thread has only recently appeared!!

Think most of us are sat here waiting for information! Doesnt seem anyone except Nitro Cerb that knows much about an alternative...but from what i gather, yes there could be an alternative to the factory clutch which can only be a good thing, unless its made from Cadbury's best of course.

I am hesitant to go ahead and contact AP being as my clutch is ok (and i really didnt want to say that, just in case Fate is watching over me, and even if you are *please* dont kill my clutch )

Edited to say, i am not sure whether its a standard clutch alternative or another route to getting a clutch, i.e. whether its the *later* style alternative and still wouldnt have been any help to you Duncan.

I know what i mean, honest.

I think by the sounds of it, it is an alternative to the later style clutch and not an alternative to the earlier one so would still have to change the flywheel and change / modify the bellhousing. An alternative would still be better than the original as at least it would help alleviate any further supply problems through TVR.

However having said this I spoke to the clutch person at AP yesterday and basically asked for any possibilities of rebuilding the clutch supplying an alternative etc, etc. Basically got nowhere and said its a shame there is so many cars off the road but there was nothing they could do about it. Cheers AP.

Nope. TVR still don't give a flying stuff. Looks like i'll have to cancel my holiday in a couple of weeks time as it was meant to be a driving holiday.

Has anyone tried the 'aggrieved' reader of any national papers yet?

It's enough to make you buy a porsche......wash me mouth out.

Well the garage should be getting delivery of my early style clutch tomorrow and fitting it. He should be able to get his hands on a few of them. Not that it will help any of you with the later style.

Also heard today that Dreadnought are looking into an entirely new system to completely replace the hydraulics and clutch on the Cerbera and Speed 6 cars from a different manufacturer. Sounds like the project is well under way. So hopefully this might be good in the future.

Yes good to see the specialist branching out when let down by factory parts.
Part of my rebuild I've yet to decided on is the clutch. Paul at Austec has a beefier 3 plate system that is easily rebuilt, as it breaks down into component parts. The only down side is it looks like the flywheel may have to be changed to accomodate it, but thats a one off cost and not bankrupting I beleive.

The only thing that concerns me about all these different routes on the clutches is that once you've gone down route B it sounds like it's effectively going to tie you into using that clutch system for ever more, unless you pay to go back to system A.

Surely someone must be able to get a batch of clutches made up to replicate the AP clutch but from another source? It's not ilke Ap are the only clutch manufacturer in the UK!! I'f i had a spare 5G kicking around I'd do it myself. Except I never want to fit another cerbie clutch in my life
