Which Is Faster?

All depends on car and state of tune.
I can only comment from experience, I test drove a load before buying and to me the clatter cam 4.2 seemed the quickest but this is just my subjective assessment. I have not driven any re-mapped cars so can't comment there. Either way, it seemed very little to choose from, maybe it was just the harsher cams in the 4.2 that made it seem (to me) to be more lively - perhaps they just suit my driving style.
Possibly the clatter cam thing is a myth, someone will be along to correct me no doubt, again from the cars I've driven it seems to be true.
In the past I have been told that the 4.2's are quicker to the tonne at which point the 4.5 will catch up and go past (but not amazingly quickly). Just what I've been told, so don't shoot me down
4.5's have more scope for upgrades, but a couple of posts in the last few days have hinted that this is all going to change as intake upgrades for the 4.2's are on the way.

Cheers.I'm sure a decent driver in a 4.2 could leave an average driver in a 4.5 looking at his rear number plate. However, bog standard 4.2, bog standard 4.5 same driver, I would think the 4.5 would have to be quicker...

I think this is very curious, average power of a standard 4.2 (347.8 bhp) is higher than a standard 4.5 (342.9 bhp) - see below, taken from the old Joospeed site. With only a couple of BHP in it, it can explain why there seems to be so little difference in performance on standard cars.
Clearly when re-mapped with the standard intakes the 4.5 has a huge power advantage over the 4.2, I'm very interested to see what the 4.2 can make on upgraded intakes.

For a 4.5 to make 195mph, first you would have to have balls the size of coconuts, then hold your foot to the floor for about half an hour between 170mph to get it to 180mph.
Then you would have light a pretty big firework strapped to your roof, and a few seconds before the firework or the engine went bang you might see 182
