Tyre size question (sorry)

Im going to get a set of toyo r888's for the cerb. can i go to a 265??? or should i stick with the 255?? There loads of space in the wheel arch!

Why?? Stick with the 255's, There isnt that much room in the arch, 265's means youd have get a lower profile too, ride quality would diminish and more chamce of buckled wheels. More aquaplaning effect in the wet too which isnt good aon any car. let alone a Cerb.

Depends on the brand of 265. Toyo tend to be a 'narrower' 265 than, say, a Pirelli P Zero.

I've got 265 T1-Rs on the rear of the Boss. No rubbing. However they aren't on spiders, they're on 9" wide SP12 wheels. Fill the arches beautifully.

If you are on 16's go for 225's all round. If you are on 17's 235's all round-The R888's are soft enough to amke a huge difference to grip. I use my "old" last years 16's fro track days and the 17's for sprinting. oh and then change the bump stops for the 17's on the steering rack or it will rub. Dont go for tyres too wide - it doesnt work

Was watching an old fifth gear last night and they were reviewing run flat tyres.

I know you are all going to suck thru you teeth and call me stupid ...but

I am fairly paranoid about not having a spare in the boot and the foam is suspect at best

I dont do track days or the pod as a rule so for general sensible driving are there any run flats
that would work on a 17" wheeled cerb??

I currently have fairly crap inherrited federals on the rear - hard as a rock - been on 2 years of my ownership and previous owner for 6 months - they dont seem to wear at all - but the handling isnt dangerous in my eyes??

I guess if I tried a fully set up cerb my view might be different??

(the front toyos I put on 6k miles ago are screwed on the inside edge with the way they were set up (by Offords not me)) - so with MOT looming I will have to look at my options soon

How many times have you had a blow out ? Run flats are cr@p.
I dont see the point in worrying about a flat tyre. Use some tyre weld. If the hole is too big to repair then call the AA - will probably never have to do this.

Hi Gazzab ...

2 flats that would never tyre weld ... 1 on cerb (sat afternoon of a bank holiday!)
1 on brand new tyre (1/2 brick on road thru side wall!)on my mazda)

I know its not thst likely etc etc but it would be me "wouldnt it" the harder side walls
would be better though I would have thaught???

Im a cruiser not a racer so handling not 100% priority (mainly cos I dont want to break anything!)

surely going wider on the back must help??? If a tyre has a larger footprint then there will be more grip! just like airing down tyres....

275/30-19 on the rear of mine.

Very slight rubbing on the top of the arch. Plenty of room.

so a 265/35 R18 should fit fine then???

Wider tyres will help with straight line grip but not necessarily when going through a bend unless you have wider rims to match. If the rims are not wide enough the sidewall distorts under load and affects the contact between the car and road and can actually reduce grip not increase it. 'Should' fit, however every car is differnet, e.g. the body sits over to the left on mine so, slight touching one side and none the other.
