I've been to Westover and they threw their hands up in horror and starting muttering darkly about boy-racers when I said that my Cerb had an Emerald ECU in it (not that they had even heard of one before) - so I don't think i'll be going there......

Has anyone here taken an Emerald-fitted Cerb to a garage in the South?

If so, where?

Cheers

The only person I know who maps Emerald Systems is Dave Walker in Norfolk I think this is his number 01953 889110, if not they will be able to give it to you

Hope this helps

The alternative would be to contact trackcar and find out who he recommends in the South. The question is though, do you have an ECU related problem or a Cerbera specific problem? An Emerald specialist may not be as aware of Cerby foibles as a Tiv specialist, if your problem turns out not to be ECU related.

Loads of bournemouth owners have been customers of Andy at APM.

Whats the problem?

You can order a lead from emerald (about £20 I think) and the softwear is available on there website for free.

Other than it using tons of petrol, none. (I'm currently working my way through a tankfull to quantify this)

Westover just said that they wouldn't be able to do any engine related work on it as they had no ideas regarding the mapping of the ECU. This included MOTing it as they wouldn't be able to sort out the emissions.

If i'm going to take it to a garage, I'd rather that they were able to work on all aspects of the car.....

Early implementations of the Emerald ECU didn't run with a Lambda sensor (used to trim the air/fuel mixture base on exhaust gas content) as far as I know, although I believe they do now (not sure if this feature is used in Cerb installations yet).

The standard MBE ECU used for the Cerb runs with a Lamda sensor. I'm not sure if running with lambda sensors would improve your fuel economy, but gut feel is that it ought to. It would certainly help get you through emissions tests, although you're not the only Emeralded car out there, so there must be a way get an Emerald'd car through the MOT test.

The bottom line though, is if you wanted fuel economy, you've got the wrong car for the job.

I'm not that bothered about fuel economy, but at the moment I'm heading for getting about 150 miles per tank on normal, sedate driving, which I reckon is a bit extreme.....

Also, there's ton's of fuel being burned in the exhausts and i'm sure it could be better used earlier on in the combustion process!

On the upside, i got it slightly sideways and smoking off a set of lights this afternoon

If you still got the MBE ecu, Austec do a special price to go back with a new custom map.
I hear quite a few have gone back to MBE cos of the aftermarket support and mapping available for them now.

Do you have access to a laptop with a serial port? If so then you can buy a serial lead from maplins for about 10 quid download the software off emeralds website and you can then talk to the ECU yourself.

I suspect the throttle pot its using has slipped around a bit from where it was and so you're running higher up the map than you should be.
You can either re-set the throttle pot with the laptop or try adjusting it a bit.
Either way the logger in the ECU will tell you whats going on.

No need to change anything

That said if you've still got the old MBE ECU then it might be worth swapping it back just to see if it does make any difference as the fault may not be with emerald itself

Interesting...........I don't know of anyone who has had an Emerald ECU fitted to their Cerb who has gone back to MBE, maybe I should get out more....lol. Anyone on here changed back?????? I've got an MBE sitting in my garage gathering dust and that's exactly where it's gonna stay even though I could get it re-mapped. Only keeping it to give the next owner the opportunity to put the car back to standard if they don't want to declare the mods (performance increases) to their insurers.

As for fuel, I reckon I get about 200 on a typical tank full, I think the LM trip last year I got about 240, but if I have a bit of fun that can easily drop to 150 ish and on track days less than 90 (eek!!!) and I'm more than happy.

Ceejay

Edited to add, my car got through a pukka geniune MOT emissions test with no probs at all this year(cats fitted of course).

There is no-one that i'm aware of who has gone back to the mbe after runing an emerald. As only I and emerald themselves fit this unit yuo'd think one of us would have heard about it

The great thing about the emerald is that you can take it anywhere to get it mapped, but it shouldn't need it unless you do any mods to the car.

It could be that you have any number of problems, the mapping most probably not one of them, unless as Matt says the throttle has been messed with, in which case it might need resetting which is very easy to do.

If you want to know any emerald mapping garages in your area drop me a line through my profile, or contact emerald direct .. one of us will be able to help you out.

FWIW the emerald will be *more* economical than an MBE running under lambda control as lambda 1 mapping brings about a big reduction in part throttle power, typically a figure of lambda 0.95 will give good benefits in terms of driveability and part throttle fuel economy.

I often switch the lambda trimming off over a lot of the map when I remap an MBE unit as lambda 1 is great for protecting cats but rubbish for anything else.

How many cars are out ther on the Emerald now then Jools?

Also has anyone tried going sequential yet? as the std injector positioning in the cerb would really lend itself to it

Think there's about 15 cars Matt. Never gone sequential, but as cyclone's car gets more powerful it might be worth experiemnting with sequential and a second set of injectors as discussed the other day. We're doing the airboxes on monday, will let you know how that pans out. Let's hope we can get some of your Cosworth expertise to rub off on it

best wishes

ooo just remembered .. how far are you from salisbury? Autocraft are emerald dealers and have their own rollers, and have TVR experience of course .. so if that's not too far away why not give them a call?

Are you going to Goodwood on Sunday?

I could bring along the laptop and we could plug it in. Wouldn't know what to look for, but we could reset the throttle position.

Neil.

They are Emerald dealers yes, like a few others, but how many they fitted to a tiv? Give me a name????? come on???? just one name!!!! or even a tvr they've mapped????? Mr.Astleford was the second? one to leave with his car and he had to come to you for mapping work right? please enlighten me...

You really are walking in the dark these days. Good luck!

But anyway,

IMO, for tuning work on TVR's down south you got a fair selection, of which I would recommend APM and Austec who have a LONG and proven running history with TVRs.

PS. Trackcar, if you need to ask who has thrown their Emerald back in the box, then you really need to get out more! Not everyone posts on these forums, the rift of rivalry has zipped many voices! Sadly.

The rift of rivalry has zipped many voices????? - I could have spent the last couple of weeks posting derogatory, sarcastic or "shit stirring" comments on quite a few threads where I feel I have been "goaded" by others (predominantely by so called "rivals", but I haven't. What I do with my car is my decision as is where I have that work carried out. Who I think are the most informed Cerbera expert's and whose advice I would take is also my decision, and this is based purely on their backgroud, technical know-how, customer service and in-depth knowledge of the marque. I have never had a failure as a result of any work that has been carried out on my car and that includes any of the many "upgrades" and many of the "known jobs" such as clutches, diffs, rads, manfolds and the odd electrical gremlins, I also can't think of one other customer who has either. That alone is testament. Can all of the others claim this? If you want to talk "zipped voices" then it works both ways.....trust me on this one, ill fitted clutches?? yes I know someone, poorly fitted and set-up suspension (potentially life threatening) yes I know someone, engine rebuild quality?? yes I know someone......shall I go on? Do you see my point? Most of the Indies will have experienced failures at some point (some more than others), but it's all about how it's interpreted. Six months ago it would bother me and I would just carry on the discussion, however, you can only tread on old ground so often before it just becomes plainly tedious, even I realised that I was starting to sound like a broken record. Everybody knows where your current preferences lie, they know you dislike Autocraft, they know you currently do not get on with Joolz, they know that Austec is now your preferred Indie of choice, and that is fine, because that is your choice. So just let this "rivalry" thing drop, it has just about disappeared, only for it to be ressurected again recently, even SteveT and FUBAR must be getting bored with it because like me they barely get involved in these particular threads nowdays. However, any thread that involves Autocraft, Austec or TCS you seem to jump on board and express your opinion, problem is that for me (and others) this is repeatative, I know your views because I've read them time and time again.

You're a petrolhead, an enthusiast and a Cerbera die-hard who has a bespoke project not far off completion that everyone is interested in seeing be a success, this is where all of your energy should be focused. This is still a great forum and I take geat pride when I post a positive thread about the last piece of work I have done on my car (usually involves a lot of hours, dedication and commitment), I post it because I'd like to hope that there are like minded Cerb owners out there who are genuinely interested in what has been done and why, and also that it could be an option for them in the future. Threads that churn up negative discussion or threads that are hi-jacked (sorry Screwloose) for negative discussion are not the way forward and there is only one way of stopping or reducing this from happening, and that's to back off and just leave them alone.

This is not a dig at you personally, just an observation, I was hoping to be at SP today but my mates car is not finished so we will be going on July 16th instead, if you are there (maybe with Nickccc) then it would be good to meet up for a chat.

Jules.

I stand by my recommendation : you don't have to be a cerbera expert to map an emerald, their beauty is in their elegance and ease of use. Almost every rolling road in the country will have mapped an emerald by now, their popularity is deserved.

I'm not walking in the dark, but I am the only outlet other than emerald themselves who seall the cerbera unit (made specially for the car) so if anyone had been thinking about changing back one of us would have heard about it, if only to give advice on putting the aircon back to OE spec.

Jon has the MBE still in his car and hasn't been to me for mapping. I would very willingly map his car though on whichever system he decides is the right one, once he is in posession of all the facts and can make an informed decision.

It's sad if many voices have been "zipped" but that's more a reflection on the degeneration of thread topics into an ego-bolstering soundboard for the hard-done-by than the genuine tuner rivalry (and I and austec both see this as healthy and welcome, Paul and I have spoken at length about this many times) , which exists to some extent throughout the whole of the motor inductry.

Ash, I really think that you need to justify this statement if you can. As far as I can see this is blatant mis-information on a public forum coupled with promotion of your fave company (yet again). Honestly I'm getting bored with it too and I'm surprised that the moderators continue to let it go.
