single fan?!?!?!?!

yes, if they had no aircon fitted. The wiring is in place for the second fan, so you can just mount another one on.
The only problem with mounting a 2nd fan in a non-aircon car is that the inner beauty plate that sits in front of the fan has the recess in the middle of it for the fan motor to sit in. The 2 fan setups have the recess set to the offside on that plate and as the 2nd fan is thinner it doesn't need a recess. I know as I have the extra fan ready to drop in but just can't atm.

I had a single fan set up and put the second one in over the winter:
The single fan and cowl moves to the left of the rad, as viewed from the drivers point of view. The RH fan you need is thinner than the left hand one. I got one, complete with cowl from a breakers for £75.00
The radiator has to come out to do this job:
1. drain system and remove rad (easier if bonnet comes off first) Be careful it is easy to damage the rad or scratch the car!
2. Move existing fan to left. When centred, the cowel for the single fan is cut down to suit and an aluminium strip is fitted top and bottom to utilise the 2 sets of mounting holes for the 2 fan setup. I cut these strips down and re-drilled them to poition the fan correctly on the left. (Not explained this well, but it should be fairly obvious when you look at it)
3. Install new fan and cowl on right hand side
4. Re-fit radiator
5 The wiring for the second fan is in situ under the cover between the rad and engine. You will find it easier to have this cover out for the job anyway, so the wire should be in plain view. Clean the plug up as it will be full of cr@p and plug it in.
6. Fit a relay in the empty slot in the main fuse board on right hand side of boot. (Refer to owners manual which shows where relay for fan 2 goes)
7.Re-fill cooling system and bleed. Run up to temp to ensure both fans come on. 2nd fan comes on after fan 1, not at the same time.
8. Stand back and marvel at your achievement!
Whilst doing all this, I took the opportunity to do other work on the cooling system:
Changes the rusty "swans neck" pipes under the cover between engine and radiator for stainless steel ones from ACT, approx £115.00, but far more importantly, get a "cooling chip" for the ECU from Track Car Solutions for £65.00 This makes the fans come on much earlier and keeps temperature in check MUCH better.
None of this is technically challenging, but a lot of it is fiddly and time consuming!!
Good luck. If you want to talk it through, drop me a mail but I may be delayed in replying as our e-mail is down currently.

Just re-read this post... I had no problem with the recess issue, as my cover had a cut-out centrally for the single fan AND one on the left for a dual fan. I guess they went to a universal shaped unit at some point... It is only thin GRP so should be easy to cut the extra recess.
