Surely that car is far too old to get an official TVR warranty. You will probably need a 3rd party warranty (and I had one when my last cerb blew up - the contribution = £0 ! ). To get a warranty you might be buying the car from a dealer or at least the warranty from a dealer (so just try a dealer to find out). You can get a 2000 S6 Cerb privagtely for under 16K/17K if you shop hard enough. Surely you can then stick some cash in the bank from what you would have saved from dealer price?
if you are worrid about engines etc then buy a V8.

There is an "official" TVR warranty, however IIRC it only covers cars up to 8 years old, and the additional "wear and tear" option (read "might help you if your S6 goes bang" ) is only available on cars up to 5 years old.

And if you are looking at a early S6 Cerbera the warranty is going to cost you something approaching 10% of your purchase price, so probably not work it, but you pays your money and takes your chances.

Of course, in all likelihood the warranty company will do their best to wiggle out of paying for anything, and IMHO on a six year old car that will be pretty easy...whatever you do, don't buy the warranty thinking that exempts you from keeping a few grand aside for repairs (and another few grand for servicing).

Have to agree, if you so want a Cerb why does it have to be a Speed Six. Can't get my head around why you would be so set on one of those when engine failure is high on your list of concerns.

Without wanting to wind up or feel the wrath of Speed Six owners, part of the Cerb's appeal for me was the AJP V8, it was the only (road) car to feature this engine so has a unique place in TVR history and it is generally regarded to be a robust engine in comparison. Sure some have gone bang but on the whole they are a far tougher option. I may well end up having a Speed Six engined car one day, but it will be something like the Sag which was made for the Six, for me the Cerb was made to house the AJP8.

Good luck with your hunt whatever route you end up taking.

i agree mate. i have a griff v8 now, and i'm just looking for something a little more discreet than the classic clattering TVR v8 sound. i do a bit of town driving and like the idea of being able to torque it through without too much clatter. i know speed sixes make a loada noise as well, but your foot has more of a bearing on it.

plus i like the sound of the easier driving characteristics of the speed six. V8's for all their majesty are tiring to drive.

i just think 6 cylinders is a better compromise if, like me, you live in a concrete jungle with few secluded country roads nearby.

Bought cheap with the plan to spend money sorting it rather than buying expensive, hoping I was buying a good one only to find I still had one that needed lots spending. Orig refurb budget was max £6k and spent £9k, since spent out another 1k on clutch seals and new front brakes. Most of the original work detailed here.

in a word, awesome! that must have been a real rush when it was finished. makes you think though, it might not even be the engine thats shagged, it might be the chassis as well!

how on earth did the previous owner let it get so bad?? a simple yearly service and a waxoil every now and then would have saved him £5-10k in dippreciation. melon!

but great stuff! will definitely be taking a closer look underneath a cerb if i decide to go for it...

Sorry if I'm making a bad assumption, but I don't think you realise the cost of running a Cerb. It's roughly twice the cost of your Griff assuming nothing goes wrong.

Running a Cerb isn't just a matter of a service once a year.

surely it depends what car you buy? 'touching cloth' obviously bought a cheaper cerb with pretty bad chassis damage.

i'm hopefully looking at a decent one, with a full TVR warranty (which i'm prepared to pay for). so thats an outlay of £1-2k (inc wear and tear) for the warranty. so if anything goes wrong i'm covered.

the only major outlay i predict is passing the 101 point test, before the warranty is granted.

Sure, you could get very lucky and buy a car that never needs anything doing to it, but please don't go into ownership assuming that will be the case, for the vast vast majority of us who run and live with Cerbs on a day to day basis, it just isn't the norm.

I'd be suprised if the warranty is worth as much as you believe once you run into problems with your car.

You will spend around £3k a year running a Cerb, more if you use it everyday, plus the cost of any major work (should it be needed) and all the upgrades you will want to buy

Have a read through this forum over the past couple of years, you will get a good idea of what a Cerb is like to live with. Fantastic cars, but not for the faint hearted or unprepared, in both performance and running costs.

regardless of warranty a cerb will cost £3K pa for repairs and servicing.
If you think it will be less then either a) can do it all yourself and have a supply of free parts or b) you are deluding yourself.
