Aha, you kept the Cerbie, silly me!
Was out looking at Rangies over the weekend. Wife wants a Disco, but I have persuaded her that a Rangie would be doing it properly - here's to getting shot of the Munich Kubelwagen Chelsea Tractor.
V8 or Diesel? We're going for the former, for the hell of it, and to keep me amused, then we'll keep up the tradition of having at least two cars with dire economy!

we also looked at the X5 but to be honest I wasn't that impressed. we've gone for the V8 (what else) I must admitt I'm not looking forward to filling it up for the first timegazm said:

Not surprised, my sister has one (albeit diesel), £100 to brim it for which she gets just over 400 miles, would guess the V8 will be around 300 but depends on type of usage as well I guess... either way
Might keep you in the Cerb more...
I run similar at the mo by way of Lexus Rx300 to act as foil to the Cerb, not quite the monster the RR is but it provides a nice contrast. Good choice.

I honestly cannot fault it for what it is. It is refined and comfortable and has enough toys to still entertain me after 2.5 years (make sure he gets the power tailgate and rear reversing camera, both still much fun for showing off). I think I have paid out for 3 services, 2 were £170 and one was £250, just standard services as nothing (and I mean nothing) has gone wrong once. It is a little juicy esp when pressing on (I average about 20mpg with mixed driving) but not as bad as some, and it can pick up its heels when required. Had a race back across France last year trying to make an earlier ferry and it sat quite happily at 120mph for large chunks of the journey (although I paid at the pumps for this and also the tank is not huge so range not that great) - oh and it has also dispatched with ease a fair number of BMW 318 drivers who seem to have forgotten that they didn't buy a 330 .
My only reservation would be that I think the X5 is probably better handling when it comes to twisty roads; for myself however it didn't need to fill this role and I did not want an X5, mainly due to image, so it didn't come into the running.

Will be very interested to hear what sort of mileage you get out of the Rangie - the 4.4 V8 is basically the same engine as the one in the X5. Totally agree about the handling - the reviews of the X5 are pretty fair, it does handle like a big, heavy saloon which is remarkable for something that huuuuge. Wifey averages about 19mpg, whereas I can coax it up to about 21, which is mad as I drive it much harder than she does. Having said that, she's not good at feathering the throttle just enough to get it to change gear, so tends to rumble around in a lower gear than need be.
The X5 has about a 90 litre or so tank, good for about 300 miles at the outside, more usually 250 or worse, and yes, at the moment that's the best part of £100 and a terminally numb hand from gripping the pump for so damn long!
I have to say in my defence, I wanted her to look at the Rangie or RX last time around but she was determined to get an X5. It certainly goes well and as I said has remarkable handling for it's size and weight, but it simply doesn't cruise - the 4.4 Sport on its 19" wheels with low profile rubber lends a knobbly ride, and personally I get back ache from the seats. Plus the interior is just well.... erm...... a bit erm..... German for me. Black with a bit of black with added black and some extra black. Oh look, there's some black plastic. With a black bit next to it. Grrrrrr. Also it's not terribly roomy inside. And let us not forget, there's the damned image to contend with too
