Serial cable

Been thinking about getting me a cable as have had the software for a while. Stumbled across this by accident

but it says it is not a standard serial cable, I thought it was and was just planning on popping down to Maplins some time. So whats goin on ere then, usual ebay bidders overpaying or is he correct?

A trip to Maplins and a bit of cat5e cable and it's done.

The only difference is that there are a couple of resistors on the lead.

Make your own, it's cheaper.

If you're not planning on mapping the thing then you don't need the resistors, any pin to pin serial lead does the trick

Agreed, I have a completely standard serial cable that I use for diagnostics and it works fine. BTW what is the score with remapping the standard ECU, is there software available now that lets you do that?

Cheers guys, yep it is just standard looksee that I am after, more out of interest and to check to see if any error codes are being thrown up that sort of thing. Will head to the big M tomorrow.

I saw that also. For £36 I was thinking I'll knock them out at work, flog them on ebay and soon pay for my running costs especially as he gave the diagram. Then I thought that had to be a one off.

Any idea what the resisters are for?

He's made a standard MBE curly lead, the resistors are used when mapping an MBE (with easi map), they are useless for the cerb because TVR have put their own stamp on things as far a software is concerned, so any standard serial cable is all you need for reading the ECU.

sorry but i just laughed at someone paying 36 quid for a cable! i might make some and put them up on there.

Don't suppose anyone has a proven working cable that I could either borrow or purchase off them?

I've tried two standard serial cables so far (9-pin female to 9-pin male), with no joy.

If any of you have made one up successfully, I'd be happy to pay for you to knock up another one for me (desperate!).

What if you've only got USB's on the laptop?

Can you get serial to USB leads that work for this?

Yes there are a couple of serial lead to usb adaptors which do the job

I havent come across a laptop yet that doesnt have a serial port (but I'm open to 'live and learn').
Also it would be intersting to see if the software works wth USB, as it is a pretty basic application, and it's not even 'installed' to integrate into the windows environment.

Pretty sure I have the right software (kindly sent to me by both headcase and Nick Chandler).

I've tried two different standard serial cables, both direct, and via a USB-serial adaptor, on two different laptops.

Also, I've tried the serial port settings listed on previous threads, but still can't get the software talking to my ECU.

In fact, all I've managed so far is to burn out the fuse for my clock/radio/interior light.

Anyone got a cable I could borrow/purchase?

Hi Wiggyfella !

I think I might have the solution to the problem with the speed six and the program.

Look at the end of this forum and You will see how I got the program working on my Speed Six. When I did this changes to the program it works both with a normal serialcable and the special one that You can see in some forums.

Nah, didn't work. Still getting the error message about not being to open the serial port, so I reckon it's a cable problem. Thanks anyway, and still open to offers if anyone has a spare working serial cable...
