wiper motor mounting

I am having troubles with my wiper motor unit - it is still working, but is sounds like the motor teeth are not driving what ever gearing system is hidden away in there.

I have a look last night and the whole motor moves around rather a lot.

- should it be firmly mounted?

Secondly to remove the unit, I guess I have to remove the coolant reservoir - true?

Thirdly - to remove the coolant reservoir do I need to remove the air filters...and is best to remove the air pipes via the jubilee clips or can I just 'lift it up' (hoping the pipes don't get damaged).

FOURTHLY - Once I get access to the motor...does it come out easily?

And does anyone know anything about the gearing mechanism?

as it happens I'm in the middle of sorting my wiper motor out (amongst many many other things atm).

To remove the wiper motor:-

1) remove the bonnet rod bracket. (2 bolts)
2) remove the top pipe from the expansion tank
3) remove the 2 bolts holding the expansion tank to the bracket.
4) Lift the tank out and then remove the bottom pipe (have some rag to plug the pipe)
5) Remove the tank bracket (2 bolts)
6) You;ll see the motor is held on by a rubber/aluminium half bracket. Remove the o/s bolt and the bracket is flexible enough to bend back.
7) Undo the brass bolt holding the motor to the wiper section.
8) Put the wipers up and pull the motor out.

The big problem I had was that when putting it back, the wiper motor bracket bolt just span in the hole. I had to drill it out to 8mm and then use a plasterboard bolt instead to tighten the motor enough to stop it moving when in use.

I think you will have to drain the coolant system to remove the tank as the pipes underneath the tank are very short, whilst you're at it you could replace the wiper "park switch" it costs a couple of quid (from you're local dealer)and is impossible to get to in situ unless you have very small hands.

Not much help...., but I'm sure someone with more experience than me will be along shortly.

Out of interest what were you doing to your wiper motor, replacing it?

yep, a little wiggle and it'll come out (oo-eer)

I was replacing the motor unit as I burnt it out when the wipers met in the midldle of the screen. I bought an original mini wiper motor, but as the mini has a 110 sweep and the cerb a 170 I took the gearing off the old one and attached the new motor. I'm still having problems though as I think the gearing mechanism was damaged at the same time, so I've had to buy an entire 2nd hand unit from bell hill. When I get the cerb back from having the pas/water/oil pump shaft replaced I'll be fitting this one. You don't need to drain the cooling system just bung the pipe up either with a bit of studding or a rag.

You may as well spend another 30 mins and five the wiper motor a 'service'.
1. Remove the wiper motor cover, those little set screw heads you can see. (Theres nothing inside that will suddenly leap out and get lost)
2. Pull out the long spiral drive cable from the tube, it drives the motors.
3.With the Wiper Motor cover off, clean it all, and put some light grease in it (you'll see where to put it.
4.Cover the long sprial drive cable in nice clean engine oil (any grade) and try and get some down the tube as well.
5. Reassembe it all, fiddle about with the wipers to make sure they 'park' correctly, as when you remove the drive cable they will flop about , and check they work correctly before you reassemble the Water header tank etc.


PS The water header tank is a bit fiddly to remove, but you'll work out how to do it.
