Yep, is totally perfect now, really quick to close the throttles
Edited to add: If you do change it youself, make some good notes as to exactly where the cable runs, also be prepared to feel very sick with your head in the footwell for an hour or so.

No, it isn't. This happened to one of the sprinting guys at Goodwood and the results were catastrophic! Broken crank, munched pistons etc etc.

Cable replacement, are these readily available? I might just check for any cable fraying first. the spring i will look out for - any ideas where to source one from do they have specs? anyone.. .....bueller....bueller....?

I don't think a stronger spring is the answer. If the problem is the cable, then fitting a stronger spring will only hide the symptoms temporarily. Meanwhile you still have the prospect that the cable will eventually snap (potentially dangerous at the wrong time, and inconvenient) or stick with the throttle wide open (which is pretty likely to be disasterous).
Mine was similar to yours....Remove the cable at the throttle end (engine) so you can get to it easier, and spray loads of WD40, use the little plastic tube that you get with them when new (and always lose after 2 days !!) to direct it into the cable, and just keep squirting and pulling the inner cable up and down, then more oil, and so on. If that doesnt make any difference, then you need a new cable.

thanks all, i'm gonna try the oil, i was tonight - but bloody trains (2 cancelled, and one seriously delayed) so too tired and wound up now!

Now, I have to take umbridge with this thread. On my car there are two springs making sure that if the throttle cable ever breaks the throttle WILL be closed.
One is a circular type on the throttle shaft itself and one is a dirty great spring attached to the cam covers. Either would easily close the throttle. I know cos its all my poor fingers can do to hold it open when I'm playing under the bonnet.
Unless these are breaking and not being replaced I really can't see that they could stick open regardless of what happens to the throttle cable.

The scary failure mode isn't the cable snapping, it's the cable jamming inside the outer. If the throttle cable wears out you can be left with broken bits of wire inside the sheath which them jam it solid. Early symptoms can include a cable that just feels a bit sticky, as in this case.

No, I'm eating your umbridge
. Reason being that you've never heard of a thread where I guy gets in his car tries to push the throttle down but just can't cos the cable's stuck. If you did have those sort of threads I could understand why a cable gets so stuck that the two springs can't pull it.
No, I think I'm unbridge central and will continue to believe dealers don't check both springs are still present on these near miss cars, which dirve arounf for a while with one spring and then when the final one goes its rev city.
