Cerb to Skyline?

The current round of wallet bashing failures on my Cerb is the last straw (I think), and the car I feel coming on is a Skyline. Never driven one but I assume they are still an awesome car even as standard. Anyone left Cerb land for the land of the rising sun?

If you get a Skyline go for the R34 GTR, 280BHP but thats just because of the ECU restriction. Easily 350 BHP with a re-map. Go to middlehurst motorsport as they have hundreds of these. Im sure I have read these are no bargain runners either...... eat turbos etc. Personally i'd keep the Cerby

parts for these are very dear and as T5SOR says they arent any better than your cerb.i would stick with it as well.

I'm going the opposite route.

At the moment I have one of each as I haven't got around to selling the Skyline yet.

Actually I held on to the Skyline 'cos I was afraid of things being wrong with the Cerb and how right I was (springs, light, etc to be sorted).

The Skyline is an R-34 GTT.

It has been fairly good and only let me down once (a couple of days before we were due to set off on the Cannonball Run '05) and we had to leave it behind.

It turned out to be just a coil pack.

I used the Skyline on the Furball 5000 this year and it was great.

The GTR is a more delicate animal, though, and is more powerful and troublesome than the GTT.

I got the Cerb 'cos I got bored with the Skyline and you probably will too.

I have a good friend with a 600bhp R32. Yes, its blisteringly quick, but doesnt offer the same grin factor. He is also suffering a great deal more than me from unreliability...take from that what you will, but i suppose the mods he has done are a contributor here.

I know which car i would choose every time, and it has a V8 in it....

From the replies it seems that the Skyline is not as reliable as I first thought. As standard are they as quick as a good Cerb? I would imagine round the twisties a Skyline would be a lot easier to pilot very fast? Hmmmmm, maybe I will keep the Cerb, I hope one day they will appreciate as a classic..

servicing is more regular and they can eat clutches aswell plus everybody wants to nick it aswell insurance is probably heavey aswell

I dont think the R32 as standard would have stayed with my standard Cerb, just didnt have the grunt. I think with 600 horses it will be quicker mind....

Is my old girl still hurting your wallet andy? A couple of theRATPAC boys have some highly tunned skyline toys. although one went pop - running at 590 Hp the other is comfortabley running at around 800HP with about another 200 to go. if you think you wallet can be hurt by the cerbie - wait until you get the skyline, i've seen bills and upgrades that put some of ours to shame! a great weapon - awesome power, grip, thrills and sounds. (espcially with external side waste-gates!) they just look like sheds though.

I agree here, stunning power, you get the giggles with the turbo sounds, but sadly feel a bit of a kevin in one. it also doesn't get the head turns a cerbie does.

Yep Dean, it's doing it again with a head gasket failure, possibly a head failure at worst, so engine out again! Big bill time.. Real annoying as it was running so well after the Red Rose upgrade and was due for a remap, induction system mods and linked decats - these will have to wait a little while.. How's ur new motor going Dean?

The standard spec Skyline is not as fast as the Cerb.

That's definite, I tried and failed to keep up with a 4.2 on a couple of occasions.

Handling is pretty similar for standard driving but, for what it's worth, a Cerb is more comfortable than a Skyline that's been lowered using the Dowmax (or similar) lowering springs.

A Skyline lowered with coilovers is unbearable for everyday use.

As for fuel economy, they are about the same.

Oh dear, that's not good - who are you getting the headwork done by? Yeah mine is going well, i'm also looking at the induction kit remap and linked decats for my redrose. i've just got it back after 12 weeks off, respray, wheels refurbed to black chrome (not anthracite - darker) , new rad, exhaust, clear front incators, new lights, drivers door stripped rebuilt, albeit the button now doesn't work!
i'm in the same boat as you i just seem to keep spending; oh but i love the upgrades out there!

The car is currently with HHC and I guess it will be there for a while, I was hoping to have get some help from TVR Power as I am really surprised that this has happened after only 8,000 miles (after the conversion).

It's never ending but worth it, I think!

Like to see your motor when it's finished.

I get the impression that most of the money that's being spent on the Cerb is go-faster or look-better money, rather than repair money.

This won't change with the Skyline.

um let me think, a skyline (R34)going to cost twice as much to purchace,
be as expencive or more to run,
probably more expencive to insure,
the interior is made of recycled milk tray packets as a pose to cows in the cerb,
wont play anything like that tune that we all love from the cerb
its not british,
dont think you would get as many smiles per mile.
yeah keep the cerbra.

Agree with that , the GTR's prices are near to the 40k mark, whilst being extremely fast and good looking, no doubt the cerby would be faster, and my god it's gorgeous!.
But what you need to do is try one out take a few test drives see what skyline suits you, all the skyline's are very good looking (minus the R33 )
