Anyone know common reasons for the M.I.L to come on, with it's annoying high pitchjed screech? Reading the manual just says "consult your dealer" and "don't drive it". Which is all good, but as it's 1820 on a saturday night and I was planning on using it, I thought I'd "consult you guys" instead.

there are many many reasons,dont panic though.
you need diagnostic software and the appropriate lead to attach to your vehicle,if you are unsure about this stuff take it to somebody who knows,as you could make it far worse.

Thanks for that. Can I actually drive to someshere to have it checked though? The engine sounds fine and I've checked the oil.

Have you got cats on still? IF you have then driving the car might knacker the cats. ie likely to be overfuelling and burning cats.

When does it come on? Mine comes on occasionally when it's warming up, particularly if it's wet. Is it a brief blip or continuous?

Check oil and water first. If all ok, get in your car and start her up. Note down when the light comes on. Take her for a spin for a while (at least until normal running temp is reached) and see if you notice any oddities or unusual readings. Post all of your findings on here and we'll have a look. Most common cause for me is after heavy rain or when the car has been washed. If there are any symptoms that sound really bad then stop engine and get her on a low loader to a mechanic. Mine comes on at the moment coz one of my lambdas is playing up. This is my personal opinion/solution and if anything happens to your car I'm in no way responsible.

Cheers - I did wash my car yesterday! Water and oil are fine. Car sounds fine too - apart from the annoying high pitched tone of the warning indicator. So will this thing just go off on it's own - or do I need to to get a dealer to reset it?

If its moisture/dampness, it will go out eventually - about a day or three usually sees it disappear. If its garaged, bung a hot air convection heater by/near it blowing hot air underneath the front of the chassis/car - bonnet open - not too near the bodywork that it gets hot though as one of your panels might fall off (joke)...
