Being new to TVR ownership I'm not familar with the correct noise that my engine should make. Yes of course I know the that the Cerbera sounds fantastic as you hear one go past, or as I put foot down whilist driving along, but this noise is all from the exhaust. What I'm concerned about is the noise coming from under the hood! I know Cerbs can sound a little rough when cold, but to be honest, mine sounds like a bag of nails! I've only had it a couple of weeks, and bought it just after it's 12,000m service from a TVR dealership, so I'm thinking it should have been set up right before I got it. To me there is an excesivwe tapping noise and a fairly heavy vibration felt thoughout the car, even when warm.
I know it's very hard to say without hearing it yourselves, but am I being paranoid? Or is this typical?

The only way the oil can be reliably checked is while the engine is hot and with a small bore clear plastic tube.
Open the filler poke the tube down just further than the distick would go, wait while whistling the national anthem. Then put your finger over your end of the tube to trap the oil, and pull out. Measure how far the oil is up the tube against the dipstick itself.
Word of warning don't take finger off tube unless back in the car or wearing wellies

Is your exhaust touching the chassi ( could cause vibrations)

They all (AJPV8s) sound noisey from cold. Should pretty quiet once warming up. I find it a useful reminder re not revving until oil is warm.
re checking the oil - ensure car is parked on the flat (not even a slight incline/decline), leave overnight, stand on passenger side, pull out dipstick, wipe, reinsert but dont do the final twist (ie push the whole way in but dont lock it), the pull out and you should get a good reading. I tend to check it 4 or 5 times each time (which I once a week at least).

There will be a few Cerbs there, 4 at least, you can listen to ours and we can tell you if yours sounds normal.

I'm docklands way, but heading back from Leeds that morning, so will try and make it in time to meet you guys. Would be really useful to talk to someone with a genuine interest/knowledge of these cars rather than someone who is trying to sell you one - if you know what I mean.

You can get a really loud nasty vibtation at a certain rev range caused by the exhaust coming into ontact with the chassis - it's very tight under there, so check that first, if its a noisy horrible sort of vibration that you can feel through your ar*e (the sort a girl might say "Hmmm, thats nice"
then it probably is the exhaust on the chassis, so get that checked.
Also all the AJP's create a resonance, a sort of low frequency vibration, at a certian rev range, particularly the earlier engines, it's more pronounced if you are acelerating in too high a gear (i.e you really should have put it into 2nd rather than leave it in 3rd, on later engines it was rectified to a certain extent by making the engine casting a bit thicker in some areas.

I've been adjusting my sports exhaust by just a little after I found the vibration had loosened the clamps and I'm guessing it had moved a little. It had rubbed slightly on the chassis to but mine was an annoying little clunk at certain times with throttle on/off.
Strangely enough my 4.5 Cerb Developed what sounds just the same problem last weekend. same symptom on starting but did start up ok. Mine did however also have a minor miss on full throttle also, as if there wasn't enough fuel getting through.
Haven't had chance to look at it yet but i hope it is just damp that's got in somewhere!
