Re-laquering Carbon bits.....

The carbon trim on my rear window is looking very sorry for itself. Originally thought I would just paint it out matt black but have been told it is easy to gently sand down to the fibre (i.e. clearing off old coating) and then relaquer/varnish. Anyone done this and if so what product is best for recoating it with. It's letting the car down a bit, well that and the stone chips....well those and the ugly fecker in the driving seat

I did mine a while back. Mine was so bad that the old stuff just fell off, a quick sand down to provide a key, mask up, and re lacquer using a spray can from halfords. Just make sure you don't rush it, let each coat dry else you will end up with sags & runs.

Looks good now well worth the effort.

The reason that you have suffered is because the epoxy resin the carbon fibre has been encased in is not UV proof (assuming that the job was done properly). You could sand off and re-epoxy and the coat with a UV proof varnish such as a quality yacht varnish. See West epoxy website for repairs don't be put off that the site looks like all boats.

Thanks Chaps, yep actually yacht varnish rings a bell from the conversation I had before, will have a peek at that website. Then again halfords is only five minutes away so maybe I will just be lazy and use their one if it seems to work.
