Rebuild time

My 4.5 needs some engine work. Has been a bit fumey for a while so asked APM to take a look. Looks like needs some valve work. Once the heads are off for repair then it might need more work eg rings, pistons, crank etc... Anyway, not too bothered (only money!). BUT any tips re any extras I could ask Andy to consider that might improve power etc....?

Gaz, good that you are pragmatic about it, didn't you have rebuild work on your last one as well? You could speak to PaulU, I remember he said he was taking engine out to about 4.7 for his special, think that was from a 4.2 as well. Might be worth a chat at the very least.

yes - last one was rebuilt too ! That was a total rebuild though. AND when I bought the prev car it was already a terminal engine as confirmed by the garage that used to look after it.

Well I think I am going for a standard rebuild then ! Andy starts the job later this week. I needed to be quick before he starts on the racing tuscan engines that are coming in for him to work on.

I'm sure Andy's got it covered tbh.
However, properly 3rd angle the valve seats, properly CC the heads, minor gas flowing of the heads and a slighlty wilder cam. Nothing drastic but should produce the easiest gains.

Fully balance each Combustion Chamber (CC) to have the same value, most AJP8's (more so the RR ones) are a bit out of balance and have different compression ratio's per cylinder because of it.

Anyone changed the throttle bodies on a 4.5 to those of a 4.2 (and machined them out to 43)?
Anyone changed the crank to a different longer stroke (steel one from the 4.7 racers)?
Anyone fitted tuscan racer manifolds.

Mine has the bored out 4.2 but not run yet, Craig (NoS) has the 4.7 crank not sure about anyone else.

CC refers to the measurement of volume "cubic centimeter", not Combustion Chamber!

Yes balancing the combustion chambers (CC) to have the same cubic capacity (CC) in cubic centimeters (CC) or cubic inches (CI), the measurement unit matters not .
The actual balancing of them does though, my understanding was that the function and intent of CC'ing heads in this case was to balance them .

Luckily I've never been in the position where I needed major work doing on my car. Currently Its in hospital having a Slave cylinder fitted, plus a service (including tappets), and an MOT, so even that ('sort of' normal expenditure) will probably cost me £1500,
I think if I was faced with a car that was running 'OK' but I'd been told I needed a rebuild that was going to cost me mega bucks, the car would be appearing on ebay, and I'd be buying another one!

PS - I know I'm going to regret this when I come to sell my car for a genuine reason, and someone looks through my PH posts so I wont post it - Oh SH*t, I just have !

I know where you are coming from. But I pride myself on selling cars in an honest fashion at the right price. It is only money and to be honest it will be great to have a refreshed enngine.
Not yet got a report on state of current engine and so dont know what I will have done to it.
