Linked decat and sports pipes - How loud are we talking?

And is it a good sound? Or does it sound like a chavs nova?
I took a set of de-cat pipes to HHC and asked them to fit them to my cerb while it was in for a few other bits and they say that they dont encourage owners to decat and have sports exhausts as its just too damn loud! lol
I've heard a friends old 4.2 that was decated and had sports pipes and his was actually quieter than mine is with just the pipes. Though the way he describes his exhaust it could have been a standard back box.

I put a vid on PH TV the other week going under a bridge.
I've been considering getting a standard back box or the silverstone performance one to see if that sounds any better.
Or maybe even putting my cats back in.

I thought long and hard about this before making my purchase, as have heard some Cerberas that sound great, but are just too loud to use as an everday car (which I do).
I went for the linked de-cats (from TCS, when I had the short induction kit fitted) along with the ACT big-bore sports exhaust + intermediate pipes, and I am very happy with them! They seem to be a great compromise.
The linked de-cats are slightly quieter and quite civilised at start up and idle (useful on early morning departures to the office), but get it beyond 3/4000 rpm and all hell is let loose! The big bore pipes give a much deeper tone and are not as 'raspy' as some sports pipes I have heard. Plus as they are replacements I still have the std backbox/intermediate pipes and cats if I ever need them or wish to sell the car!
I have heard a few where the baffles have been removed from the std backbox and whilst they sound great, if you want to put the car back to its original spec you'd need to buy another backbox (which seem quite difficult to come by).

Went from totally standard to linked de-cat on standard b/box, not much difference over standard setup IMO, so went to sports exhaust........ perfect
Loudest = decat with sports exhaust (especially if you go for the big bore ACT system) makes you deaf!

My car is on normal decat pipes plus a sports exhaust. It is VERY VERY loud. It is (was!) burning some oil which also encouraged the explosions on lift off. APM was emabrrased when driving my car to the MOT place as it was far too loud. I am a show off so I dont normally mind but sometimes I do wish I could arrive without attracting so much attention.
Personally I cant understand this obsession with LOUD, thats all it is a LOUD noise. SUre everyone looks at you, but dont think that means they are inpressed! Are you impressed whwne you hear a max Powered Nova with 12" bore exhaust> I bet you looked though. The only people who think it sounds better are his mates. Most of the general public are just not inpressed with NOISE. Loud doesnt make the car any faster, so why bother? Sports exhause sound OK, best combo is decat linked pipes and Std rear box.

I'm not convinced that people think, whats that noise and have the same reaction whether its a nova or a supercar. I think most people would see a cerb coming round the corner and think that the noise was appropriate for the car. Though i do think this perception would change depending on how early in the morning it was making this noise
I also agree that the noise a little car with a big exahust makes isnt nice. Its almost like a kid wearing adults clothes, they think they look the business but everyone else thinks they look daft!

Mark - I am having de-cat pipes fitted to mine on Monday, will pop up to the Post hopefully next Thursday (seems a long time since I made an appearance) so you can have a look / listen etc.

I agree - not a lot of difference (LD + SBB), but sounds more classy/expensive - if you know what I mean...
Might go for sports exhaust - but which one?

I suppose it depends on what you call loud. I know the ACT big bore cat back sports exhaust give a very deep bass note
which is nice, but probably too loud for me (and the neighbours 
). Tim now does a version that has a bit of extra silencing in the tail pipes which I'm fitting to mine, which quietens it down a fair bit, but it still has a nice deep note to it. If you're not in hurry I'll record it when its fitted so you can listen, but that is a few weeks away yet.
