Which Starter Motor?

I need a new one (again!) and have several options...
Option 1
Standard Nissan Maxima Starter from Wood Auto Supplies £144 + VAT exchange
Option 2
Buy one from TVR Power £220 + VAT exchange (Nil stock so they'll need to recon yours)
Option 3
RaceMettle do an uprated one with increased cranking power etc, for £374 + VAT exchange.
So Guys, I need to make a decision on which way to go but would like a more powerful one (hopefully last longer) but not at £374.
Last two starters lasted 12 months and 1500 miles. (Same starter just reconditioned)

Thats what I'd go for - I would think a Nissan one would be a lot more reliable.

Surely it's only guaranteed if you fit in a Nissan Maxima though? Don't think Nissan would be very impressed if you returned one dead and they found you'd been using it to turn over the engine of a JCB or something.carl_w said:

I thought the recommended approach was to stick with the original Tilton Super Starter and get it reconditioned by Eurolec (was it Eurolec). Anyway on the last thread on starter motors, the Tilton was pointed out by some to be far more durable, with a life time in years rather than the months of the Nissan jobbie. I could be talking nonsense, but it's definitely worth a poke about in the archives.

I've got a TILTON racing type in mine and its lasted 18 months and still going strong. It starts the car every time with no problems. I know a man that has a reconditioned one that he may sell to you if you're interested...

They can't all be that bad? Can they???
Mine is the original factory fit and has so far lasted over 6 years without fail.
What goes wrong with them? Is it the starter solenoid switch that overheats??????
Just curious, and hoping that the inevitable won't happen.........(quickly touching wood and hoping that my Cerb will still start!!!)

You'd may as well shop around and try and get a cheaper Nissan Maxima starter motor, there are a few of us with these fitted now, some for more than a year and so far no problems.
Most of the refurbed Tilton Starters seem to be failing pretty quickly, so you have to ask the question of how well are they being refurbed, what is actually being refurbed, are they being refurbed with inferior parts or is the starter motor just not up to scratch in the first place, it's possibly a combination of all.
For me it was easy, £200-£350 for a TVR Tilton Starter or £75 for a Nissan Starter.........anybody's guess as to which would last the longest, but so far the Nissans being going strong for about a year.

Hi Jules, You say £75 for a Nissan one! The cheapest I've found is £143 + VAT, who has them for £75?

OK guys, important info on the difference between different supplies of starter motors.
Nissan type...normally rated to suit said car with power rating of 1.4Kw, lasts forever on Nissan and very varied on Cerbera.
Original TVR type...uprated version of nissan type with power rating of 1.6Kw, there's a new one for sale on ebay at present, starting price at £225, brand new with no exchange required.
Uprated TVR type...sold by Auto electrical on ebay, power rating of 1.7Kw and £239 brand new with no exchange required. They tell me that they supply this to the TVR dealers as it is correctly rated to cope with the high compression rating. I've ordered this one!
Uprated type from RaceMettle...£374 + VAT, light weight and fully uprated. Price is exchange for your old one!
I've studied all the photos of these different starters and they do all vary slightly! The most different is the Racemettle one which would need to be to be lighter in weight! The other differences you can see are only the outer casing and the size in length of the solenoid!

Grateful if you can let me know how you get on, as mine is behaving suspectly, and I may just replace now before it let's me down (which no doubt would be in the most public place possible)
