clutch gone so where do I go

sunny day take the car out....no clutch, well cant get reverse, wont go into 5th and when I pull back for reverse... grind. Have rang local dealer (i live in east herts) he say it sounds like one of the fingers in the clutch have gone, cant do anything until 5 dec and it will be £1500 if fingers have damaged seals. Does the cost sound ok? I am a spit/polish and drive owner, so have no idea on costs. Could I get it done ealier by someone else, I have read some stuff about improved clutchs by others or should I stick to AP. It needs to be recovered from my home so for the extra transport cost could go somewhere else. By the way its a 4.5 1999 car. Thanks for any help.
£1500 does seem a bit steep. But maybe they were quoting on the safe side??
It is possible for it to have damaged the seals, and even to score the slave cylinder. Although not always.
Due to the fact that the piston will no longer be pressing on an even set of fingers, therefore causing the piston not to run true in the bore.(hope that makes sense)

The dealer will use AP.The clever trevor one is alot better and I recommend the slave cylinder is done at the same.
Its at times like this I was self employed already-I would of been happy to do the whole thing for £1K using the clever trevor clutch and slave with seals(if it was all needed-less if not)...fitted!

The AP clutches have proven to be a problem to many a Cerb owner.
CT has improved on the design and has tested the two back to back on a test bed, his clutches have far outlasted the AP ones.
I know a number of dealers are starting to fit CT slaves, and I would guess clutches too.
Also anyone who is in the market of designing/supplying aftermarket parts for Cerbs and TVR's should be encouraged.

to themThanks Scrooloose, spoke to andy at APM and yes he can do it plus have asked him to do the 6k sevice it needs, he told me to buzz the AA if I had relay about getting it to him, have done so and they are picking up the car and taking it down to him today. big thanks for very ones help, will up date you when it gets back.

mines been gone 6 friggin weeks !!
Blimey that's a long time. I feel sorry for you. Still if it's any consolation the weather's been rubbish lately.

Just curious but is there any reason why you couldn't fit your own (I'd certainly buy a CT part)? There must be enough room in the engine bay to slide the engine forward, the car's so long. You'd only need to take the weight with an engine hoist and move it forward. You wouldn't need to actually lift it. Probably disconnect the manifolds, although you might get away with splitting the exhaust at the first collector.
I've replaced a few RWD clutches before on Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts, my old Caterham, a 1969 Chevy and an old Rover SD1. Any reason why the Cerb is any more problematic than any of these?
