Exhaust Advice.

Hi all

Just trying to decide which way to go for the new exhaust.

If you have any pic of yours, could you please post, as I need to do a 'Show and Tell' to the Japanese garage, it's a bit hard to explain in my broken Japanese to them.

I am not sure of the combination to go for. I am not going to remove the cats cause don't want to mess with the legal stuff. I don't mind it loud..and was wondering if there was an option to simply remove the factory rear box and just run straight through pipe form the cats. Anyone done this before?

Windsor's recently remplaced the back boxes with straight through pipes:

Hi Longbow.

Is it really, really Touring Car loud? or is just loud for a street car? there are more than a handlful of Modena's and Lambo's which howl away over here, so loud is not so much a problem. I just don't want it to be too unbearable and look ike a complete tosser.

My cherry bomb and sports pipes is LOUD, and not Nova loud but deep loud, I have had 118db at Goodwood, so I expect no silencers at all is going to be deafening!

No, you have to hear it to believe it. At idle its ok, but on the move its race-car loud, very piercing, and after a motorway blat my ears hurt!! But the pops on over run are violently loud and consistent, and at night it looks like a shower of sparks from the rear end (or so the policeman told me........). I'm getting a new cat-back system, so if anyone wants my straight through one, feel free!!

But even with my Cats on? will it still be so violent?

Will you ship to Japan for me? Of course if I pay charges on Standard international frieght etc? If you have paypal I could sort something, but it could be a pain in the arse packing it for me etc. So cool if you say NO...I would understand. Please let us know if it's something you could do. Kev, it would be very easy for a half-decent garage over there to make you something similar up, afterall its only straight pipe. Take the pic of mine and try a custom exhaust garage, all they need to do is either make a system, or cut off your silencers and weld some pipes on with suitable tailpieces. Took a back street garage in Doncaster around 1.5 hours in total, so I'm sure with the size of the aftermarket scene in Japan you would find somewhere. I think the way I originally had it was nigh on perfect - decat and sports pipes, so thats what I'm going to stick too. Tim, my exhaust will be availalbe shortly actually, within the next 4 weeks anyway. Can you come and collect it from Doncaster one weekend?

I agree just lose your cats, no need to replace all of the exhaust. keeping the cats and putting a straight through exhaust on is just plane silly and expensive. lose the cats £70.00, and that will be loud enough. don't buy any new cd's for the motor.

If you want a happy compromise you could talk to Tim @ ACT and replace the cats with some Cherry Bombs/inline silencers, the car now has a much deeper note and a resonance that you can feel. One of the sprinting guys, said that whilst sitting behind me at Harewood Hillclimb the exhaust note just went staight through him.

It's a great sound, but not for the shrinking violets amongst you.

Guys, would love to get rid of the Cats, but am a bit worried abut getting busted. Will have a think today about the next steps. Will try MadMark's suggestion first and disconnect the back box and see if I can take the noise. The main reason is that I can't seem to get rid of the knocking and banging from the back box, even after several alignments from the mechanic.

Will post gain as things proceed. Live sound recordings to follow as I continue the 'research'.

Are you sure it's the back box thats knocking and banging? it might be the manifolds as they run very close to the chasis, near the gearbox, and sometimes knock.

Yep, bane of my life right now. Any bright ideas?

Tethering the bolts of the cats (or replacement pipes) together using a large jubilee clip seemed to mildly improve matters for a period. Then the jubilee clip snapped. But there must be a better way....?
