brown/black clutch fluid

Hello all,

Been finding it more difficult to get in gear and car moving slowly forward with clutch depressed. When revved engine it felt like something was running over pebbles ie running your knuckles over small pebbles quickly. Pulled up into parking space yesterday and couldn't get in/out of gear unless engine turned off. Limped home in second. Checked clutch fluid to find it up to the level, but a horrible brown / black colour - like oil. Worst case scenario, what are the different problems I am going to be facing in order to sort it out?

Sounds like the seals gone in the master cylinder. But I'm prepared to be told I'm wrong.

Yes its definitely the seals.
Park the car up and give the clutch pedal 10 pumps, then take a look in the drivers footwell for fluid, and your head in the footwell and look up at the Master cylinder where the clutch pedal attaches to the rod and see if you can see fluid. If its dry then it's the slave cylinder. Look under the car and if you can see fluid under the gearbox/clutch, then its the slave seals that have gone.

If there is fluid in the footwell its the master cylinder seals gone,you will have to replace the master cylinder-£70 TVR Power,got to do mine,looks fairly straightforward apart from bottom bolt.If there is clutch fluid under car,coming from bellhousing,slave cylinder seals have gone,£260 for new cylinder including seals,& a b*****d of a job!,just done mine!
