Driving home from Halfrauds with my shiny new battery sat in the passenger footwell.
Some complete donkey pulls out of their driveway in front of me, forcing an emergency stop to avoid a T-bone.
Don't notice until I get home that the battery has tipped over and now I have a bloody great acid stain on my passenger mat!
Not happy

Tis one of life's lessons I'm afraid.
i - Buy new battery
ii - Put in car
iii - Make sure it can't fall over and destroy your carpet

More helpful advice on this one... back in my misspent youth, I had a motorbike as well as cars. Because there were passengers in the back of my car, my girlfriend was holding my helmet in the front (yeah, yeah...) and thought keeping the curry sauce in it was a good idea on the way back from the Chinese. Similar experience to Scrooloose... a "brake and avoid" occured and, yep, my bloody helmet (yeah, yeah ...again) smelled of curry ever after.
Mate had a 2 day old S class merc, one trip to macDs and a tray of 4 milk shak placed on rear seat. His 3 yr old son decided to jump on them, much mess ensued, everyone was very cross. after some There was an initial token clearing up with the non-absorbant napkins you get but the end result was a sticking rotten milk smell. So the car required a full strip down and clean + replace where necessary by the merc garage. Very expensive.
He got rid of the car soon after, I always wondered if he considered getting rid of his son.

Fortunately it was only one cell that leaked. the rest are fine.
I've topped it up with a little deionised water.
As for the carpet, I diluted the acid as much as possible and it doesn't seem to have got any worse.
Now i'm off to attempt swapping the battery and windscreen wipers

Neutralize it with sodium bicarbonate or some other strong alkaline, otherwise the acid will stay in the carpet and contimate everything that touches it and for years to come you'll be leaving shoeprint shaped patches of acid everywhere that slowly etch through whatever you touched. Be similarly paranoid about acid that may have got onto your hands, or anything else you have touched afterwards. Acid damage may only show up weeks later but it gets *everywhere*. Also if the loss is more than a few CC make sure you refill it with sulphuric acid not just ionised water. If you've already put the water in I'd get that cell drained and refilled. Most places that sell batteries will have facilities to fill them. Topping up with water is only good for replacing water lost through evaporation.

Swap over the battery and wipers!
Nah don't do that the battery doesn't clear the screen edges properly and your wipers don't pack enough voltage to turn a Cerbera over.
