oops - advice - busted tonight

what happens if you get reported for bad driving - tonight - driving down a dual carridge way - splits into three lanes just before lights - the lights changed to green just as I approached - so I accelerated (for a couple of seconds) through the traffic, (the road was a little damp and the back end of the car slipped away from me - adjusted it, all under control)- and then about a mile up pulled over to take a look in a shop

On pulling over, a car pulled up behind me, took note of my car / reg number etc and then got out of the car and told me the he and his wife were going to report me to the police etc etc etc......

Two questions - (a) is there a way that you can report and (b) can i get in trouble - or can the police only give me a warning / prosecute etc - I am a natural born worrier - and any advice would be great!

Who says you where going fast... you where not where you. Its just that cerbs seem to look like there going faster than they actually are and the exhaust only makes it sound fast too.

I'm pretty certain there's nothing the police would do - saw a baby being bounced on a rear-seat passengers knee before, called the police and they didn't care. Different in New Zealand though, they have a phone number to call if you see something dodgy and if you're reported the police do come knocking.

As an ex plod - I can tell you that there is NO way any joe public can report you for speeding. If its dangerous driving - again its a minefield for them to prove if all you did was overtake --unless you went backwards past him!
Also -- what expert qualifications in road traffic assesment does he have? Hell plod wont even turn out when you get burgled, so what chance has he got of making them rush round to clap you in irons?
Forget it, and on the 1,000,000 -1 chance anyone does speak to you - its your word against his, and dont let anyone tell you any different -never admit anything.

Nothing at all. If several people make a complaint then they might look into it. But let's face it - unless you were speeding past a camera you're fairly safe. You can't get the police out for a burglary, never mind about a minor complaint like this.

Just a thought....How would you fair if it was an off-duty copper that saw you speeding or driving mad? Do they still have powers to do anything?

True. I had a letter once from the police (in NZ) after a member of the public spotted me 'driving in an alarming manner' - this would've consisted of passing them on a dual carrigeway in an old, loud, fast car. But no danger. From their point of view, probably just gave them a fright.

dont know bodger - anyone know here - if a copper see's you do something, but is off duty?? can they still value his opinion over yours?
