Earlier today I had to wave goodbye to the Cerb as she went off on a low loader to Fernies with a probable Clutch failer.

She was fine last night when I took her out for a blast. Couldn't select any gears this morning when she was ticking over. With the engine off, I could select all gears except 5th (didn't check reverse). Clutch pedal seemed normal. Nothing wet in the footwells.

Boo Hoo....

I dont think I've ever known a car develop a clutch problem so abruptly. I've read other links where a clutch has been fine one day and then zip the next. With other motors you will at least get some hints that things arnt as they should be. But with a Cerbera censoredALL.

How bizarre!

Yep - all of my clutch failures have been like that - fine one day (or even one morning) then get back in later on and nothing.

I had the exact same thing as you - could not engage any gear at all with the engine on, even though the pedal still seemed to have some resistance in it. Could engage all gears with the engine off though

Sounds like the fingers have broken to me.

Pretty much the same with mine when the fingers went - drove it one day: fine. The next day got in the car & couldn't get anything. When the hydraulics went it was a case of the pedal going floppy & bite point going odd with sticky gears that soon became no gears.
I think with a lot of other cars, clutch failure tends to happen with the friction plates getting worn out so you get a more gradual problem with it slipping.

When my fingers went it didn't happen over night.

It happened as I was driving! One minute all is well, next minute no gears and roll to a stop in the middle of rush hour traffic. Uphill. Nice.

Hope the problems not too bad and you get your car back soon.

Cheers.

I know they say every 20k miles or so, but how spooky as I've just passed the 40k miles (and I know the clutch was done a few years back).

Will have to wait for a week or so as Fernies are fairly busy at the moment. Still at least the car is there - one hassle out of the way.

You've still got the original one Dave - it's doing well isn't it, must be because it's been used by good drivers

What are you trying to say!
The first one lasted for 14k miles (and I did 8k of those! Oh I see your point ). So the 2nd has lasted 26k miles.

Thanks for the kind offer Craig thumbup

Gonna treat myself to a new Clevor Trevor clutch along with the Master and Slave cylinder kits. I get a prefferential rate at Fernies (cause I bought the car from them - 2nd time round) so hopefully that will be some damage limitation. Another way of looking at it, is that at least it should buy me 20k miles clutch trouble free.

I've read a lot on PH that 25k is the accepted mileage for a clutch. As mines still going strong (apart from a recent fluid change) I think Jensena was just making a funny comment, seeing as I bought his old car. His new one however has had clutch parts go

So what's the current thinking. I've put money aside to cover this - do I go for a pre-emptive clutch change sooner rather than later in the year, or just wait for it to go at a possible inappropriate time?

Well a Clevor Trevor Clutch and the Master and Slave cylinder is going to set you back £700. Fitting is a good 6-8 hours labour. You can do the sums Dave! If you're just looking for ways to spend your dosh then go ahead. Id personally wait until either the clutch or the Slave cylinder goes before replacing. Whatever you get out of your old clutch re mileage means you'll get back on the new one - if you see what I mean.

Thought I'd post an update.....

Well it's been nearly 2 weeks since I had the Clever Trever clutch fitted. Boy, how stiff! Also gears are a right pain in the arse to get. I'm talking couldn't even get into 1st to drive it away from Fernies! A couple of scary moments as well. Like the time I couldn't get second after pulling out of my road cold (i.e. keeping her under 3k revs) and a car baring down on me. Had to go with 3rd in the end after several attempts at 2nd and losing all my revs!

Anyway, she's started to really settle down now, and I can get most gears most of the time. So I reckon another 2 weeks aught to do it and she'll be as smooth as a baby's bot! Highly recommended upgrade (although initially scary).

My clutch went up at Blackpool weekend just gone. First gear was a bit troublesome going along the Prom, thought maybe it was getting too hot in the traffic.....Drove to Garstang, still difficult, but manageable. By the time we went to leave for home (260 miles!) it wouldn't go into gear with engine running! weeping

Did manage to drive the car home, but wasn't fun! I am also going to have the Clever Trevor Clutch fitted - but find your last comments a bit alarming! Why is it so difficult to get it into some gears with the new clutch??? confused

Is that normal?

I take it some rubber lube was put on the seal when fitted? If not it would cause the seals to drag and be a right pain.

Fernies fitted it, so I'm sure they know what they are doing.
Apparently it's normal and it does sort itself out after a few weeks.
Something to do with some initial wearing required in order to meet a fine tolerance??
Just a bit worrying to start with.

I post this only because I am trying to learn here - I picked up my Cerbera last night, with it's new 'Clever Trevor' clutch and I was expecting to experience the same as you based on your comments. However, I am delighted to say that there is not a hint of stiffness in the gears, like a warm knife through butter in fact.

Now, I don't understand why we have both had such different experiences - I'm almost worried that mine is smooth now!! rolleyes

I also had the Clevor Trevor uprated Slave cylinder fitted as well. Dunno if this makes any difference (as obviously this pushes the fluid around to disengage the clutch when you press the pedal)??

Also, Fernies did tell me that they had to assemble the clutch i.e. it didn't arrive as a complete unit. Maybe they did something wrong??
