Diagnostics software won't talk

Hum made my own lead as per the MBE cable diagram but it's still not working.

Do you have to set up the com port for any particular settings.
Is there any order to powering on the car, starting the software etc.
Does the software fire up immediately or take time?

Mine started up after a few seconds, have you tryed getting a USB to serial lead from maplins about £18
worked first time, but you will have to set your com port to 1 if it says it conflicts let it replace it, restart your comp
and it will be fine, this will work with you serial lead aswel.

Check the comm settings, think you need to press F8 maybe???

Dave - I get the impression that you know about PC stuff, but just in case.....

The ECU only talks when the ignistion is on
Also check your Com port settings, Go into Device manager and check the properties of Com1. (If com1 isnt showinj go into the BIOS and check Com1 is enabled)

Settings on mine for Com 1 are :-
BPS=8600
Data bits=8
Parity=none
Flow Contrl=none

I keep getting Comms Error - Retrying at the bottom of the screen and the Blue Cerbera picture with ECU Disconnected or Powered Off

Com port settings I've tried at 9600 and 4800 - as when you press F10 to set up the ports it defaults to 4800.

Still no joy and I've tried three laptops - all Dell but different models & diffent specs from a Pentium 3 -700Mhz to a latest & greatest, although they are all running windows xp.

So I wondered if it was Macafee antivirus (as it was on all three) so I uninstalled that but it didn't help.

I've got two serial leads, one's a straight through serial lead that came with the car, ones made as per the MBE lead. Neither have any impact.

My next trial is with my Targus USB to serial convertor.

Is it possible to have a serial port blow on the ecu?

OK - this was annoying me so I've been a little anal. My USB to serial adaptor has link, tx and RX lights on it - so I could see I had a link and a pulsing transmit, but no receive.

A quick link to work and I've pulled down our serial analyser software and gone to work on the signals.

The diagnostic software sends a simple carrige return about twice a second seeking a respnse, but I'm not getting any.

I'm guessing my serial connection on my ECU is duff

Dave - I know it was working when I had it. Remember it wont work if the immobiliser has cut in, in other words it will only work if the engine will start -- Just on the off chance that you hadnt thought of the obvious

No I didn't know that. Thanks for the hint. I've been trying it with the car in my garage and just turning th eignition on. I hadn't thought about the immobiliser.

I'm not 100& sure though !

Yup - I can confirm you have to have the immobilser off - i.e. hit the button on the remote. Suddenly everything starts working.

seems like i was pluging into the dash pod (tuscan) and not the ecu
