Hi guys and girls

Last night, after fitting my new filter and remote filter head, I noticed a severe drop in oil pressure under braking.

I was going down hill slowly and braked at the bottom quite hard with the engine at idle. The oil warning light came on and the gauge dropped to zero. I killed the engine straight away. As the engine was stopping the gauge came up again briefly to around 20psi.

I had overfilled the sump after fitting the new filter and remote head but not by much. HAving checked again this morning it still seems to be a little overfull. The oil pressure is around 75-80 psi at 3000rpm on the motorway and is rock solid there. It had a new oil pressure spring around 2000 miles ago.

I should also add that I primed the engine by turning it over on the starter with the coils and injectors unplugged until oil pressure appeared on the gauge. It happened pretty quickly, within a few seconds.

I know other people have experienced this phenomenon. I understand that the sump is baffled. Could it be that me and the others that it has happened to have had one of the baffles fall out of place. Are they cast into the sump or are they slotted in some how? Is is possible to drop the sump without removing the engine?

Does anyone know if the sumps changed during the production run? Mine is a 1996 4.2. It has the oil dipstick at the front of the engine.

I would be grateful if anyone has any thoughts on this. I can feel an Accusump coming on........

Cheers

Mine used to do this unless the oil level was over filled a bit, I also fitted my Accusump after the first time as it isn't a nice feeling.

I know of another cerbie owner ( a '99 4.5)which also does the same.

I suspect if the baffles are there they aren't much good

Edhorne, I'm guessing your sump has been replaced. The original dip stick position on the 96 is at the back of the engine (close to the driver)

That's the case on my 96 AJP!

Yes, I assume it has been replaced at some point. It may even be a new engine as my history only goes back so far.

Does anyone know if the sump comes off without too much hassle?

Nice - an accumulator for the oil system. What a great idea, I've not seen that before.
