Petrol smell...

Whilst bopping around in the beast this weekend, I noticed a distinct smell of petrol. Managed to work out that I only noticed it with the window down, so I assume that it's coming from under the bonnet! (razer sharp, me!)

Are there any "typical" leak points in the fuel system, or is it just a question of checking all over?

I am obviously very sensitive to not setting fire to my beloved beast, so don't worry about me trying to live with it!

I had this. It was the filler neck into the petrol tank that had worked itself loose. Just needed rebonding back in.

Or it could be a split pipe going to the engine. Either way - get it checked out/found before using the car again. There's been a couple of under bonnet fires

If 4.5 check the fuel rail. Mine developed a pin hole!!!

Mine had a leak at the fuel pump under the nsr wheel arch, it would only leak if th engine was running.

Check around the fuel regulator on the back of the fuel rail, there's a nice little box in front of it to collect any leaking fuel so it's easy to see if this is the culprit. Mine leaked when the plastic bush on the spiggot (you'll start to lose interest now I've used the word spiggot) started to deteriotate due to heat. The bush pushes the o ring on the spiggot square into the neck of the fuel rail. Mine had a little slop in it and this was enough to allow the o ring to shift causing a slight leak. Actually it was more like a third washer jet staight onto the windscreen but it was good at shifting the dead flies.

P.s. Matches are a bad choice of light source when investigating flamable materials as I found to the cost of both eyebrows when checking the level of electrolyte in a battery on an old Ford.
