Thinking of rejoining the fold
Discussion
Hello Chaps, long time no see! Ive been thinking about getting back into Cerb ownership now the cuts and bruises and commenst have stopped hurting - only problem being this one would be a second rather than a first car and thus limiting my budget. There is a 98 4.5 near me that is on at cheap money, its a CAT D listed after an engine fire, no accident damage and its all been fixed - is it worth the risk, what does everyone think? It would get me back into a Cerb and I wouldnt be bothered about resale as I would just run her and run her. Thanks
CAT D's are cheap, or should be. If it's been fixed properly, inspected and passed, then I can't see a problem. Buy it cheap, and if you do have to sell it at some time, the you just sell it cheap.
Back in July a white van clipped the front wing on my Legend, and scratched the front bumper, you had to look hard to see the dent, it was like someone had thrown a cricket ball at it, but it was written off and became a CAT D car, there was nothing wrong with it !! But on a car worth £1500, a new front bumber, new front wing, respray front bumper and front wing, blent paint into front door etc etc, it's just not economical to repair, same rules would apply to the CAT D Cerb.

Hi bigbazza, when was it damaged and repaired...recently or a while ago?
If recently then it might have been just more cost effective for the insurance co to write it off. If it was several years ago then the damage may have been vast but I have seen some repairs of TVR's on new'ish cars that you would never know. These cars are difficult to sell but sometimes as good as new.
I would say from your point of view that you don't intend to sell it but run and run it, I'd say go for it if it looks good.

Thanks everyone - got a quote to insure it as a 2nd car and was pleasantly surprised - Gaz its on at £10,500 but has been on a while....
Its done 26k miles - just wondering why the engine caught fire and whats been done to the elctics etc since? hmmm
Like its been said above, SURELY this one cant cost the £1000 per month to un like the last one did - I HAD to kill her coz I didnt want anyone else to have her, but couldnt afford to keep her (and before any BIBs read that, i'm on about the car OK?)
Im going to have another look tomorrow and I'm taking the Mrs to try and convince her - shes understandably wary but a Tiv fan all the same.
I'll keep you posted.

I know, but then if im looking at a rebuild in 6 months or a year then what good would the history have done anyway?
Not sure if anyone remembers Heath from the factory workshop but he is now the TVR technician at my local "pre loved" Tiv dealers so that would be handy.
As you cna see, im up late coz I cant get the thought of driving a Cerb out of my bloody mind - im doing everyones nut in at home - I am so scared of going for it and it being a MASSIVE white elephant!
So where would book value stand on a 98 4.5 with little or no history then? Has to be around the £13k mark surely, so the 30% off would be about on the button wouldnt it?

sounds a dear car to me mate, they have dropped more than you think mate. for that money you can get a car with history and no damage.
Good luck baz, it's def a buyers market at the moment.

I wouldnt pay more than £7k for a '98 Cat D with no history. Like Cooky says, you can get good straight ones with History for £11k - frightening isnt it!
Mine is kinda up for sale at £11k. Recent rebuild, new clutch etc... but still needing a respray
(Same position as last time i posted) I did have a Pher interested in the car, but no reply to emails anymore so I hope they are ok and if so, could they please email me back and let me know whether they are still interested
Also, I say kinda up for sale as even though I won't be using her much and she is a total extravagance, I'm finding it difficult to post up an advert and I start a new job next month with a 50% pay rise!
So she won't be quite as extravagant after that... bigbazza said:

No history, means you'd price it as a high miler,,,, £11k.
On the register means it's worth fifty percent less IMO, so I'd value it around £5.5k. Some people value them at 2/3.
Have you seen the 2003 4.2 on AT, that's a cat D, for sale at around the £15k mark.
