The sensor is in the rad iirc, however be careful if you disconnect it to get the fans going, as the ECU will assume the engine is cold with the sensor disconnected and fuel accordingly. The extra fuel can kill your cats (standard map is pretty rich as it is!). A common cause for the fans not working is that terminals in the white connectors to the fans get corroded, preventing power from reaching the fans.

I cleaned out the connecters on the fans and covered them in WD40. Seams to be okay now.
I couldnt find any sensors on the rad. I was trying to trace the wires from the fans. They go into the wing but I then lost sight of them. There looks like theres a little panel on the inside of the wheel arch which I could remove for a better look.
Theres a sensor under the cover thing labeled as temp sensor, but I think that the sensor for the temp gauge. Cleaned that out anyway which may have helped.
I could really do with a workshop manual!

If by "the cover thing" you mean the "F1" cover, between the engine and rad, then yes, that is the temp. sensor. There are 2 connections under there, going into the steel "swans neck" pipes:
There is a capillary tube with a spiral protective wire wound round it. This is for the temperature dial on the dash.
There is an electrical connection which is the temp sensor for the ECU. It is the ECU which turns the fans on. The first comes on at about 91 degrees, the second at about 95. (The temp shown on the dash will be higher as the dial tends to over-read due to the fact that the capillary tibe from the sensor runs past the off-side manifold on route to the dial!)
One of the cheapest and best improvements which can be made to this system is to install a cooling chip from TCS, about £65.00 This lowers the temp at which the fans come on. It is a 10 minute job to install.
