Gearbox Broke Today

Well it all started so wel............It was a lovely day for a blast, so I did, I'd done about 40 miles, and was accelerating in 3rd gear when all of a sudden it sounded like there was a mad man underneath the car doing a drum solo with 2 heavy hammers. Pulled rapidly to a halt at a Bus stop and pretended to spak into my Mobile while I made sure no Porshe owners could see me, before checking things out. Seems like 3rd Gear had gone, so got a lift back with a nice AA man. Car now booked in tomorrow to get the Gear box seen to. Oh the joys of Cerbera ownership

sorry to hear thats jens mate hope she gets fixed fairly quickly and not to many pounds either,took mine for a good blast today after a month off the road you know why, had a good race with a bently, oh the joys of having her back on the road again

Blimey that's a bit tough. You've been unlucky with that car.
Good job you stopped OK. I shreded two gearboxes with the old Capri until I had it rebuilt with Quaife bits. The second time the bits jammed the gearbox solid and it locked the rear wheels in the outside of the motorway. Not a good place to be.

So this T5 gearbox - is this the Borg Warner one fitted to the Cosworth etc?
If so, I know they are expensive but you can get uprated gears, selectors etc.

I should have it somewhere, it was doing the rounds on the website six months or so before you joined PH's. I'll see if I can dig it out

Thanks for all the Advice guys. The car is now at APM, I spke to Andy this afternoon, He reckons 3rd gear has been stripped. Interestingly enough he knows the car, and the previous owner which is good. I asked for his advice about the g-force uprated tansmissions, and he said unless I intend to do some hard core racing then it isnt worth it. Andy has a good reputation so I'll follow his advice and leave it in his hands.
Luckily I have an AA warranty so the first £500 is covered, so hopefully I wont be too much out of pocket.

Sorry to hear of your gearbox problems,have been following your threads regarding your clutch issues with your car,as i have had similar problems with my 4.5.Finally got it back on the road about a month ago after i spent about 3months having to remove gearbox,bellhousing & slave cylinder-TWICE!and replacing the master cylinder!Im hoping it all holds together now as im doing Le-Mans in June.The very best of luck sorting your gearbox matey,if you have problems speak to the guys at TVR POWER in Coventry,they gave me some great technical advice when i was fixing my Cerb.

Esso - Did you fit a Clever Trevor Slave cyliner? I seem to remember you got yours about the same time as me.

Bad luck mate sadly just the joys of Cerb ownership. Mine went late last year sounded just like yours but turned out I'd ripped 5th gear out of it. Luckly I could drive mine the 100 miles home in 4th. I've since found out it's not an unknown problem with the T5 box. I had the box recondition by a local gearbox specialist in Downham Essex. Cost me about £650 can't remember exactly. I don't know if you'll do the work yourself but I did, and it's not a real big problem. For what it's worth I swear and cuss the thing any time it goes wrong (which isn't as often as people will have you think) but forgive it as soon as I drive it. Good luck, get it fixed and enjoy it.

I didnt fit the Clever Trevor one,got nitrided one from local TVR emporium but it was different to the one in the car,the piston was 5m/m longer so had to get it modified as clutch was slipping.Only found this out once i had fitted it,thats why i had to do the job twice!!!
