ecu not connected

Right...

Downloaded software onto laptop (version with the blue Cerb).

Not a 9 pin serial port on laptop so used a USB to 9 pin connector to connect the laptop to the ECU.

Software comes up with output screens, but keeps coming up with Error - Unable to open serial port.

I have heard that USB to 9 pin can be troublesome so has anybody got 1) further info/advice or 2) a link to a USB to 9 pin purchase that they know works (ie are using it themselves).

Any info appreciated.

I havent tried this, but apparently this is one solution

"If You are using windows XP You should right click on the icon for the diagnosics software and then choose properties. In the dialog box You get then, You should choose the compability page. There You can tell windows XP to run the program in emulated windows 98 mode. The thing is that windows XP doesn´t adress the serial ports in the same way as windows 98, I have done like this with my computer that runs windows XP and the ECU program works perfect".

You have to configure it on COM 1 or it won't work, runs fine in XP.

I had to delete the thing that was using COM 1 for it to work.

Hi !

If You press F10 you will get a communications window in the software. Try to change to com 2 and see if it works. Otherwise check what com port your USB adapter is trying to use. If it possible force it to be com 1, as that is the default for the software.
You need to have the ignition on and the immobiliser switch off to be able to use the software.
Read the .txt files that come togheter with the software and you will learn how to use and do diagnostics with the software.
For the newer software i have made a small users guide from the txt files.
Another good source on how to use the software is the Cerbera workshop manual, for the AJP8. Jools has also made a little description of how the tune the AJP8 with the software. You can find it in the Cerbera manual that is in wordformat. I think it is downloadable from Byker28í:s homepage.

I was using the software for engine tuning both on my car SP6 and my friends 4.5 in the end of the fall last year with good results. I also solved a hard to find hesitation on my car by recording wath happend with the engine while as was driving. The HT leads and the cranksensor wire was routed together, it caused the signal from the cranksensor to be disturbed at 5500 rpm:s.

I'm assuming you are trying with the ignition on

Ignition on and press the blip on the key fob to turn off the imobiliser. I spent a week trying to get it to work before someone told me...

So, laptop on, ecu connected to laptop ignition off, press black button ignition armed, blip the fob as if to start her ie all lights on and fuel pump primed, open software in emulated windows 98 mode and still Error - not connected to ECU...

Is there a specific order?

If not I'll have to faff around with the com ports.

I'm working with a USB to serial port, on COM2 even with no problems.

Marcus, control panel->device manager->ports and tell us when you have your USB plugged in which com port it comes up as. I suspect its comming up as a COM 3,4,or5 which is why the software can't see it.

I think I had the laptop going with the software running. When I blipped the button for the immmobiliser the software kicked in and worked. When I didn't have it workign I was runnign everything through a serial analyser and the software constantly polls the serial port looking for the ECU.

Faff with the com ports first. I also tried a USB to serial device and had to frig that to be Com1 in Device manager. You usually find the mouse/tracker pad etc gets in the way and you have to move that. Just make sure it's Com1 and everything should work.

Can I draw your attention to above post. I'm using it on COM2 and I have a USB to com thingy with no probs. I think first find out where his COM2 is.

Thanks to everyone - It worked for a while and then the battery on the laptop faded and the bloody thing shut itself down...

However, for those who may wish to know, from the start...

USB to serial port cable only connected to USB on laptop, not ECU - yet

On laptop - right clicked on the ECUDIAGS icon and opened properties - clicked on the compatibility tab and unticked the compatibility mode box - ie running on XP with no ticks in any other boxes - closed properties.

Opened My Computer> Control Panel> Performance and Maintenance> System> Hardware Tab> Device Manager box> Ports(COM & LPT) and right clicked USB to SERIAL PORT and opened properties - clicked on port settings Bits per second 9600, Data bits 8, Parity None, Stop Bits 1, Flow Ccontrol None - clicked on Advanced - changed COM Port number to 1 (FIFO BUffers ticked) Receive and Transmit Buffers set to high - clicked ok - closed all open boxes or clicked ok.

Right clicked on ECUDIAGS icon and clicked on Run as.. - unticked the protect my computer box - clicked ok - Loaded up software and pressed F10 - changed primary and secondary port to COM port 1 and changed the Baud rate to 4800 clicked ok.

Plugged male serial port from USB into female serial port on ECU board. Pressed black button on steering pod and blipped fob once - software started to work. Started engine and watched numbers going up and down.

So a reasonable success at last.

However, only ran a max of 2 minutes before disconnecting from ECU. Used ECU tools to Reconnect to ECU, but still disconnects itself after a minute or two.

Any ideas why?

One time I was messing with the diagnostics I was having major grief with it keeping on disconnecting. Turned out the car battery was very near flat. (It took 3 days on trickle charge to bring it up to fully charged) The disconnect problems went away once the battery was charged.
