How hot is too hot???
Discussion
When driving in traffic the other day the engine temp creeped above 100 and the oil pressure dropped when at idle to about 20.
Is this ok? what temp do the fans kick in?
When the egine temp goes above 90 I wack the heaters on to draw some heat out the engine. Do I need to worry about doing this or not?
Cheers,
Mark
P.s. thought there was a thread on this somewhere but just spent 10 minutes trawling the archives and not found anything.

The gauges have a very bad habit of being inaccurate so i wouldnt rely on that alone, if i tap the glass on mine i can move he temp up or down 10deg ish
sure the first fan comes on around the 100 mark and the second about 105 ish
Fan one comes in at 91 degrees, then 95 for the second, but this is ECU controlled and does not reflect the dial temp. This over reads as the tube from the temp sensor to the dial runs past the off side manifold. I have seen mine go to 110.
I would highly recommend a "cooling chip" from TCS this replaces the chip in your ecu and switches the fans on sooner (£65 IIRC). My personal opinion is that the factory settings bring the fans in too late and that sometimes, in very hot weather and slow traffic, they cannot recover the situation.

I take it that the ECU takes the temperature from the Temperature Sender and uses the actual water temerature in the engine and cooling system to turn the fans on and off. In which case, how does the temp guage actually work as its not controlled by the ECU?

after a reply from far eastener to an earlier post that i made about temperature worries, i've decided to fit digital dual coolant temp/oil pressure guage in place of the original guage. hopefully this will ease my paranoia about cooking/siezing the engine.not as good looking as the original but safe than sorry is my thinking

buy an ecu chip from trackcar that kicks the fans in earlier approx £65 i did last summer and it`s well worth the money.
I also had that and the Cerb behaved itself and it was an end to the roller coaster of temperature swings.
its one upgrade i would definately endorse.

The dash gauge uses a thin capillary tube running inside a spiral wound steel protective sleeve. The sensors for both ECU and dash screw into the “swans neck” pipes under the panel in front of the engine. The capillary tube is cable tied along the chassis and runs past the o/s manifold, then through the bulkhead to the dash.

How/Where do the digital bits connect up to - I was thinking about having a separate digital readout that showed the actual water temp that the ECU is reading (maybe near the ash tray or something) but that can be disconnected/removed in order to keep the original look of the car...

i'm looking at an electric kit that includes guage and both senders.going to use 't' pieces off of the original fittings, the guage is standard 52mm so will go straight in the dash.going to keep the original plumbed in and tuck it under the dash pod so i can put it back to standard. found the kit at www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk. going to order one after the weekend
Mine got too hot the other day reading 110+ degrees which I didn't believe, until it blew a load of steam - then I really knew it was hot, so don't disregard the gauge thinking its gone mad !!
Checking whether headgasket or worse at the weekend - lets hope headgasket otherwise I might blow a gasket as well, as I have two and a half litres of water in the sump

Warpig1, unless I've misunderstood your post, surely a digital readout is only going to give a very accurate false reading of the water temp after it has been along the capillary tube next to the manifold and not the water temp in the block/rad?
sorry probably didn't state very clearly, the eletronic sender units will engine end not dash end - no false reading there. i'm just leaving the original setup in place and tucking the guage away in case i want to put it back as it was
