Ribbon cable repair

My ribbon cable has come adrift, i've got the steering wheel off etc but need to gain access to the spool of ribbon behind the spring loaded drum, is there an easy way to access the drum ?? i,ve released the big bolt in the centre also

Just give the steering wheel a tug and it will comme off, but the 3 miles of ribbon cable will fall out if your not careful.
But before you do that, the connector at the end of the ribbon cable inside the wheel is glued into the wheel housing, and if you trace the ribbon cable up from under the steering wheel, you will feel where it is connected to the end of the cable that sits inside the steering wheel hub, see if you can reconnect it there first.

PS - Isn't it good that we now have an an hour of sunlight in the evening so we can all do a bit of fettling when we get home!
