tacho gone mad?

Guys your help please.
Driving home tonight my Tacho is all over the place
Idles OK
accelerate and it dips then sometimes catches up?
when driving in gear it tends to read low then as the throttle returns to its stop the tacho reads true and steady
So Im assuming an earth problem? does anyone have any ideas/fixes.

Big fuse time, this is the first sign.

I really hate to invoke the Big Fuse, but check it! If its popped or fractured or its connection nuts are corroded and not making good contact the voltage running the car's electrics may be low, and the tacho doe sdo funny things if its supply voltage is too low.

Thanx Guys.
Yep Big fuse corroded at one post with signs of heating up.
cleaned/changed now all seems good. will take to work and back to check.
any excuse to drive.

Nice to have a big fuse thread again, we haven't had one for ages.

It's one of the few faults I can diagnose...

I had exactly the same, with really slow wipers as well.
