TVR dealer/factory letter to confirm Thatcham CAT1 Alarm

When I had my Chimaera there was a letter in the "bible" that stated that the car was factory fitted with a thatcham cat1 alarm. I've now got a cerbera and my insurance renewal is due soon, but I dont have any proof of a CAT1 being fitted. I'm sure the same alarm is fitted to the Cerb (META), Does anyone have a similar letter for the Cerbera that I can send onto my insurance company? cheers

I seem to recall a previous thread that identified TVR as using Thatcham equipment, but not having the appropriate approval from Thatcham as fitters? Can't find the thread now, but anyone else recall this?

It's not a Thatcham Cat 1 alrm, the handbook I have at home contains a letter stating that which alram is fitted, and I'm pretty sure it is Cat 2.

Yep think I started it. Problem was as described above.

Fitted but not approved. Thatcham therefore don't include it on their list of factory fits. Your insurance company therefore won't accept it.

Only thing you can do is try to blagg it with your insurance company or get a Dealer to sign a letter to say its aftermarket approved.

I had to do the latter. The letter however must contain the registration details on the car and be done for each individual car.

Same problem now with three different insurance companies.

Agreed, there should be a thread somewhere which goes into further detail; my memory seems to recall that CAT 1 was not possible because whilst the alarm used was Cat 1 standard, bonnet sensor's were not fitted and hence the install cert was not poss.

I'm sure I have a letter somewhere, which has always satisfied my insurance company. I'll go and have a look and post when I find it. You can have a copy of that if it helps?

Okay, found it. Unfortunately the atual letter refers to a Chimaera, but it's probably the same alarm system on the Cerbera too isn't it? Anyway, heres what it says:

'Fitted with M99T2 alarm system. This alarm comprises of 2 units linked together; the M99T2 alarm control unit with batter backed siren and the M36T2 immobiliser along with the M23A microwave sensor. The M99T2 alarm system together with the M36T2 immobiliser is a Thatham category 1 approved article if fitted by a Thatcham approved installer.'

if I can have a copy of the letter that would be great. I'll then get someone to knock something similatr up. After all, i'd rather not have to get another alarm fitted just for this! Cheers, steve

I've got a letter from the factory for my Cerb, not dated, but i'm guessing it's 1997, that states....

"Every TVR from 2ND Jan96 is fitted with a Meta99T, comprising of two items linked together, the 99T control unit with battery back up & M36T immobiliser along with the GEC Plessey MK4 microwave.


The M99T is cat 1 if used with the immobiliser, ultrasonics, boot & bonnet switches, due to the nature of the vehicle, this cannot be classified as cat 1.

The microwave trigger input also uses the input for boot & bonnet switches, which are not fitted.

The M36T on it's own has cat 2 rating, as a standalone immobilities approval number TEI 119/0895."

Bearing in mind, you could use the boot switch that operates the light, how hard could it be to fit a bonnet switch to get cat 1 approval ?

This is basically what I told my insurance company and they were fine with that. I just told them it was factory fitted.

Also depends on the insurance company with the standard letter. Direct line wanted to see the reg number quoted on the letter. They agreed with me that these alarms were fitted as standard at the factory, but still wanted to see the reg quoted.

Just to be clear, the only issue with Thatcham is that the Factory were not approved fitters, hence the confusion. Typical TVR frankly!

I am sure it couldn't be that expensive to get an approved fitter to fit certain enhancements to the overall set-up, and consequently get certification for the whole alarm system...
