Has anyone lifted the body just enough to get to strip and paint the outriggers ? I want to get to mine but would like not just to treat the underside. Is lifting the body by 6" a practical solution & what needs to be removed from the car to prepare for the lift? I know there are lots of threads on body fully off.

Pretty sure if you're gonna lift 6" you may as well lift completely as all that you'll need to disconnect for a 6" will mean it will go all the way.

be prepared for what you are about to find !! but you might be lucky ,if you are going to keep the car get the body off and do it properly its the only way of getting to the bits you need to

What a bit like this.

Not that I did it myself I hasten to add so can't offer much advice I think the fuel tank had to come out to access bolts at the rear, inside seats and various bits of interior trim.

Echo the above, even if you were to get enough access to have a crack at the outriggers etc, you still had better go in mentally prepared for the full monty chassis refurb. Mine had a couple of bits causing concern pre-lift, the initial lift was then done for investigation rather than access, as soon as it was up it became clear that bits that aren't visible are often worse than the bits that are, mainly because they won't have had the level of waxoiling and protection over the years.

I will be doing the Full Lift eventually but I wanted it to be timed by me and not by having to do it. I know I will find more but its only the outriggers that cause me concern at the moment. Sounds like short term protection is the solution.

Mine was like this.

The sneaky ones are under the dash above the bell housing, behind the rear seats, and you have to cut the front seat belt mounting points in the inner sill to get the body past, all seat belt bolts out,oh and remove the petrol tank 4 of them there, the ones at the very front will also snap...
other than that straight forward.

I did see your thread & What an impressive job. Did you have any idea your outriggers were that bad?

I knew that they needed attention, but to be truthful, no, I didn't think they were MOT failures. Glad it's been sorted now though - feels like it's all ready to rock for the summer

I think I will start to plan doing the job properly. Body off shotblast zinc or aluminium spray coated then powder-coated. Plus all the other jobs that would make sense to do whilst it is off. Winter Project I think

If I ever got round to doing this I was going to use Zinga, its as good if not better than traditional galvanising and none of the warping worries. Its used extensively in the offshore and shipping industry.

had mine done last autumn - what started out as a simply waxoil turned into full body off and outriggers completely replaced - if I could remember how to post pictures I've got one here showing how little was left of the upper side of the outrigger once the body was off - it was quite worrying really - they looked perfectly ok from underneath & had passed the MOT the previous week.

Hi Pete

Have been thinking about this myself, could you give a rough idea on costs.

Hi Grahamn,
Have a look at the blog on my profile & you'll see the details - I had some other stuff done at the same time.
Cheers
Pete.

Christ that is a shit load of work for £2500, when you say whole body off, was the entire chassis actually out for that and then re powder coated or was it just a bit of a lift (like in my pic above, green one) so that the outriggers could be cut and sorted. Makes me wince if it was a whole chassis out job as I paid considerably more, but I suppose I also had a shed load of other stuff done when mine as all going back together.

I would be interested in your advice on taking the body off? Are you going to the meeting tomorrow night?

Yes the whole body was off to replace the outriggers, but I had the rest of the chassis cleaned / repainted rather than re-powder coated so engine etc remained in situ - the rest was in pretty good shape & it was going to be about £2k more to have it all powder coated etc. The amount of corrosion on the outriggers was surprising as the chassis had been waxoiled twice since I've had the car, but all the corrosion was on the top where you can't get at with the body on - still at least it now has several very thick layers on there before the body was replaced!

Yes I will be at the Hagley meet tomorrow night & can bring along some pictures if you like?

Pete.

Oh good that sounds better, mine was stripped and removed, engine out the works and then sent off for sandblasting and powder coating, I had some visible concern patches on more important central areas as well as the outriggers though. £2k on top of what you paid sounds getting closer, I in fact spent £9k all in on bringing mine back from the brink - hard to break down but I think £5k-6k would have been the apportioned amount for the chassis renovation and then maybe £3k on extraneous bits that were done whilst the cars was in pieces (new rad, new bushes all round etc etc, sports exhaust, decat) and obviously a full service with tappets, the list was fairly endless and scary.

Went from this:
