Done the TDC with help from the collective here and I think for the first time in its life its shimmed and timmed to perfection.

So

It looks like it could do with some reinvention.

If you're comfortable with securing the butterfly's, that rod could be reduced in half (to a D section) in the bores .

The rod is simply 10mm steel rod, so I think I'll start with a new piece of rod rather than bugger up my original . But yes flush fit screws amd a D shape sounds about as good as I can get it.

One point of interest in each of my left back butterfly screws a hole was drilled through the screw itself. In one of the two screws. In other words the even bank was substantially weaknened at tickover.

The only person I've heard doing this is Trackcar, but I don't think my cars ever seen him, being a poofy southern car most of its life.

Even more interesting when I took the right bank of inlets off the 'o' ring was missing in the middle two inlets on the gasket. eek

I assume (probably wrongly) that the left bank was drilled to account for the right bank running weak.

My problem is that my car is silky smooth around town. If I fix all of this will I turn it into one of those undriveable snatchy 4.5 cars I keep hearing about?

Possibly, but then it may also be able to out accelerate your M5. hehe

Hell, after a remap it would lose the M car even quicker whilst being smooth around town. evil

Does the pot fit snugly on the end of the rod or is there some play in its position?

should fit snugly, as it needs to move as soon as the spindle does.

snug as a bug in a rug, but then it doesn't have much choice as its snugness is controlled by the two allens and two flatheads, or have I misunderstood?

Re the 'flow balancing' hole in the screw done in times past, I've seen this on the few I've looked at on the bench, I wonder if the factory did it tbh, as part of the original set up confused

Stop encouraging him hehe. If you look on M5board.com you will see M5 taking about 1/4 mile times in the low 12s.

www.m5board.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=84864&highlight=drag+time

They don't have to do much to an M5 upgrade wise to have it much lower eek, there are bolt on chips changes and even turbo superchargers for M5's

How many Cerbs were beating that at Santa pod and by how much before you start laughing at the M5. Even more is that the mid range on an M5 where most of us do all our in gear roll ons is very strong in the M5. You have to get revvy on the Cerb to be ready.

I see a few 12.9's, not exactly low 12's and on a nice warm florida based strip. Im assuming the drivers of the two cars listed are reasonably able, as I've never personally heard of a standard uk E39 M5 breaking into the 12s barrier... A 4.2 in tip top condition on here managed a 12.4 at santa pod, where its not exactly warm! A 4.5 with a map alone would be able beat this figure further, the terminal speed being higher aswel... (Assuming the same driver)

Julian, im a big fan of the E39 M5, but you really should just get your Cerb mapped as it should have been from the factory and accept that its appreciably quicker than your M!

The M5 is a hugely capable car, especially considering its weight - but its weight should mean the Cerb wipes the floor with it. It is, afterall, a Cerbera (1200kilos) towing a lightwieght Caterham (500kilos - lets say its on a rope, as trailer weight would weight too much.) I'd like to know how little power a Cerb would have to make to only match the '5 in a straight line at sub 120mph atleast?!
