These Purple F*****g Hoses ! Help !!
Discussion
Just had a week of 'fettling' - New Wiper motor Park switch, new Big Fuse and Big Fuse Holder - a bar steward of a job by the way, there is just enough room to get get one hand down there, but you need one hand to hold the cables out of the way, another hand to hold the torch to shine the light down the gap, another hand to hold the spanner and your fourth hand to hold open the top of the fuse holder so you can get the spanner on the nut.
Anyway everything is now back together, apart from the Purple hoses on the passenger side bank. I have just spent an hour pushing one of them on, then started on the second one, but as I pushed and pulled to get the the second one on, the first one popped back off. Before I carry on, is there some special technique, or is it just one of those pigs of job?

Alan,
Got the car back from Trackcar a week or so ago.
Silverstone Performance backbox (not part of the scheduled upgrade but Joo found my box knackered), linked decats, short induction hoses (which look great too), and remap.
Picked up 40-50 bhp. Just as impressive was the power curve which started out like a flight of stairs with a couple of landings and ended up like a steep ski lift. Lost the uneven running at 3000rpm and lack of pickup between 3000 and 3500rpm. Just a surge throughout the whole range now.
Great result, great guy and great value; thoroughly recommended.

So everyone thinks the whirlwind induction is worthwhile - apart from me. How will I keep up with Alan if he has that done

We got short(er) induction as standard
Those purple hoses were a great idea as a "showing off" / "looking flash" type thing, but really, utterly pointless from a performance point of view.
Another point - Any idea why us 4.2 owners got treated to 32 valves but the 4.5's only got 16? [me]has visions of a cerbie with one of those chav 16V vinyls that normally adorn vauxhall corsas...<shudder>[/me]

Just carry on rubbing my nose in it and telling me how it never goes wrong Dave -
But in all seriousness, after having both a 4.2 and a 4.5, I still think in standard form the 4.2 is the quicker car, so unless you are willing to spend nearly a grand on an Induction kit and a remap, there is really no point having a preference for a 4.5.

Except for the fact that the 4.5 will then be considerably quicker, closer to it's originally quoted spec and it will shut up the tight arsed couldn't be bothered to spend that little bit extra 4.2 owners
, who think they have the better car...... Jules.
Just spent the weekend in the Lake District with a major problem with the car only running on one bank. Stood and watched the AA man struggling refitting the hoses after being no help at all. So just stood and watched... hilarious. Simple mind I know but was a funny end to a shitty day.

thankfully there's no shortage of people wanting to do just that .. remember 1000 pounds in rover V8 tuning might get you 15-20hp if you're lucky .. on cerbie 4.5 you could be looking at 50hp! a grand is a lot of money in anyone's book, but compared to the hp you gain from other cars for teh same price it's fantastic value! Let's put it this way : no-one has asked for their car to be put back to std again afterwards

Are you thinking of the 24 valve S6 engines?
No mate. I'm thinking of this:
